All you had to do was look at the GTI's ratings. It has roughly the same European ratings and is EPA rated at 21/31. I just don't get what the big mystery was.

Not THAT different. Very similar technologies. And increasing MPGs usually means decreasing performance which I wouldn't have expected them to do for the ST. It should be performance at all costs, economy as a secondary consideration. One of the magazine reviews already complained about the excessively tall 6th gear which of course is the main reason they're getting that highway number. I wonder if that criticism will become more prevalent as the magazines start doing the "hot hatch" comparison tests with the ST and others.....

And again the point of using the GTI as a basis for comparison is they both get about the same European combined rating, so it stands to reason they should get roughly the same EPA ratings too.

I'm too lazy to read back through all the posts but aren't these numbers somewhere between the numbers speculated by the two sides of the debate?? Not sure either side can gloat much . Frankly, I was hoping the #s would be worse so I wouldn't feel so bad for not having one.

I told my buddy at the dealer to order me two.. one red and one blue becuase I can't decide. He is a good guy and will do it even if I can't afford it... I bet I end up with a red one though. I really shouldn't but my 2005 ST is at 150,000 miles and it is in need of suspension and brakes and detail... hmmm.... any excuse I guess lol.

6th gear shouldn't be a factor for much. Just hiway acdeleration in 6th... so what. If I want to accelerate I will downshift. For autocross type stuff you will never see 6th gear. But it will give the rags something to complain about. They never like Ford anyways.
