*PA* Team MA Fall Hike - Saturday, October 2nd

Team MA Fall Hike - Start time 9am on Oct. 2nd - Distance ~20 miles

Enjoy the outdoors? Want to check out the fall scenery in Central PA? Then this hike is for you!

This will be a solid 7 hour hike so we need to get moving early! We will be meeting at 9am at Kings Gap State Park, Kings Gap Road, Carlisle, PA 17015. When you turn onto Kings gap road, watch for a small wooded area with a parking lot a couple hundred feet up on the left - that is our staging area and our ending point for the hike. It is labeled on the maps below as 'Pine Plantation Day Use Area'.

We'll gear up and leave a few of the vehicles in this parking lot before driving the rest of the cars down to Caledonia State Park where our trail begins. I hope to be on the trail before 10am.

The Trail:

Our trail starts out in a parking lot in Caledonia State Park where we will walk up the road just a short ways to the AT trailhead. From there it is 11.2 miles of moderate terrain to Pine Grove Furnace State Park. Great views from the ridge all along this stretch. We'll most likely break for lunch somewhere along this section.

Once we reach Pine Grove Furnace there are a couple historical things to check out as well as bathroom facilities and the newly opened AT Museum if you want a little history. From here we'll leave the AT and cross the road to pick up the Buck Ridge Trail towards Kings Gap.

The Buck Ridge Trail is 6 miles of moderate terrain with one steep climb in the middle. Not much in the way of views along this stretch, just lots of state forest. It ends at the Mansion in the center of Kings Gap State Park. Nicely kept grounds here to look around. From the mansion we head 1.9 miles down the mountain along the Rock Scree Trail back to the Pine Plantation Day Use Area. After that we'll all congratulate each other and die of exhaustion shortly before driving back down to Caledonia to pick up the other vehicles and call it a good day!

I wouldn't suggest this hike for beginners, but if you do get out on trails occasionally and are in relatively good shape, there is nothing along this stretch to be concerned about

Pine Grove Furnace State Park
Caledonia State Park

Be Sure to Wear:
Weather appropriate clothing! Keep track of the forecast for a few days leading up to the hike. Remember, layers are your friend. Come with extra clothing on and you can always take bits off as the day (and you) warm up. I recommend a good pair of loose shorts and normal (taller than ankle length) socks. Jeans tend not to be very comfortable on hikes.

Be Sure to Bring:
A day pack
A bag lunch and snacks
Plenty of water/ fluids for the day
A good pair of sneaker or hiking boots
An extra pair of socks
A hat
Bug spray

Attending:
John (slipster17)
Lorna
Kevin (Saucymuffin)
Ken (Kenzx3)
Rachel (G_wagen)

Few more weeks till this!

Looks like Lorna, Kevin and I are going to head over and do the stretch from Caledonia to Pine Grove this weekend just to see what we are in for along that first stretch.

We've done Pine Grove to Kings Gap enough times to know what that segment is like, but we haven't done the first bit yet.
