Exhaust question regarding FI

Hey Tom, do you have any experience with cut-outs?
If so, I'd like you to chime in on this when you have time.

The question is does an exhaust cut-out of equal, smaller, or larger diameter (than the exhaust) have any effect on the spool time or performance of the turbo on a FI car?

I understand placement is crucial, but for this, we are going to have the cutout placed shortly after the downpipe, and before any exhaust mufflers/resonators in a straight-thru exhaust system.

Argument #1: An exhaust cutout will increase top end performance and have no effect on spool time.

Argument #2: An exhaust cutout would benefit spool time and have no effect on top end performance.

A lot depends on the size of your down pipe , HP goals and where the cut out is located

Answer these and I can better try to answer yours

Okay, for conditions sake, this'll be on a 2.0l Zetec with a power goal of 235 whp. 2.5" downpipe, and the cutout would go just after the oil pan.

With 235 HP goal and 2.5 downpipe and guessing 2.5 Exh , I wouldnt think there would be any gain in spool ot top end from a cut out , If it did anything at all it might do 3-5HP up top at the most

The higher up in power them more it might help on both spool and top end

Okay, so say you have a 3" downpipe and a 3" boost activated cutout with a 2.25" exhaust. Would you see gains in spool and top end?

Wat about with a 2.5 down pipe and 2.25 exhaust. My goal is 300, but since I'm in socal I want it as quiet as possible and then flip a switch at the track. Thanks
