Enlisted Air Force question

Hello all. So a couple months ago my recruiter had me sign a form that basically was garunteeing me my job and what not when they found me a open mechanical slot. This form stated I am enlisting for 6 years with pay grade E-3 in open mechanical. Well I never said I wanted 6 years I wanted 4 so I asked about that and she just said its the same for everyone so they can hold your place incase you want 6 years. She said ill have my choice at MEPS right before I leave for basic. Well is this true? Will I have a choice on 4 or 6 at MEPS in may when I ship?

Thanks

She's lying. If you want 4, get your contract to state 4 years. NEVER, with anything in life, sign your name to anything that isn't what you want.

I was gunna call meps and ask but I thought she may have been lying about it. Well is going 6 years a bad thing? Or is it way smarter to go in for 4? I'm hoping to be able to do some more work towards a degree while I'm in or after I get out.

I did 6 right after 9/11. I spent 3.5 years TDY. I don't regret it. Only you know what's best for you.

Temporary duty. Time spent away from your duty station for deployments, training, schools, etc..

Alot of times one can volunteer to tdy ya? I guess going tdy would not allowe me to continue my education though like I plan. I am aware I may have to wait till I'm out of the Air Force to do This though.

Correct, there are volunteer ops along the way...if qualified.
