Thinking of enlisting

So I've been job hunting for the past nine months. I'm still in retail, unfortunately.

I've got a Master's degree in journalism. But nobody in the civilian world seems to give much of a damn about that right now.

Imagine my surprise when I stumbled across an Air Force ad for "Broadcast Journalists." I've contacted my local recruiter, but I don't know any Airmen.

What's the likelihood that I'd actually get placed working with cameras and producing video, like the site says?

I'm 24, never fired a gun, but I can run a mile in under seven minutes. I'm not so worried about BT, but the actual job placement.

P.S. My sister's boyfriend is a Marine. He suggests the Coast Guard.

Well, one place a masters degree will help out is the military. A degree will get you a commission. If you don't know...there are Officers and Enlisted. Officers=Upper Management. Enlisted=Blue Collar. If you wanna sling a camera, pen, microphone or what ever you guys do..then Enlisted is the way to go. If you wanna manage (lead) those people...then Officer is the way to go. The Navy rate (job) is called "Mass Communication Specialist (MC)" I retired as enlisted. Would have like to have gotten my commission but no regrets. Hope this goes with out saying....Officer=More Money Enlisted=Less Money. I was Navy....so I am bias. But from various conversation through out the years..... I constantly hear "I should have joined the air force". Spend the day talking to a bunch of Recruiters. Ask to speak to an Officer recruiter from each of the services. Kind of general...hope this helps.

There's not much point for me to go in as enlisted, not with my degrees. I;d have to have an officer spot for it to have meant everything.

I don't see why I'd enlist if I'd be treated like a common solider though.

Not to dis them, but I didn't go to school to be a grunt. That's not what my use is.

Just FYI, No warrant officers in the Airforce. Also, you will have to enlist and reach a certain rank to qualify for Warrant. (different ranks must be reached for each service). Kind of a "Can't have you cake and eat it too" situation. I could be wrong but, there are no "Journalist" Officers. Just Officers that manage Journalists. I only know about the Navy. There are Limited Duty Officers (LDO). You must be and E-6 to apply. If you want to be a "Journalist officer" You would have to enlist and get an MC rating. Make E6 then apply for the LDO program.

If you just want a job and get paid more. Go to an officer recruiter and see what they have to offer you. You need to find out if you are qualified to join the military. A lot more is needed than just a Degree. Times are tough all over.

I don't want to lead. I don't want to have anything to do with that.

The whole point was that the recruiter was talking about the listing for "Broadcast Journalist," which the service described as someone who "documents the lives of Airmen and spreads the mission of the Air Force."

That certainly doesn't sound like a soldier to me. Sounds more like what I've already been trained to do, just in contract form instead of salaried - an arrangement that also exists in the civilian world, albeit an uncommon one. Then again, that's just a title listing. "Once you're in," my ex-Navy coworker said to me, "it doesn't mean shit. You do what they say, when they say it. No one gives a what you were officially chosen for."

You'll have to forgive me if I sound entitled - I didn't appreciate the recruiter throwing enlistment papers in my face within 2 minutes and ignoring my questions. I understand he's got a quota, but I'm not going to just drop all my concerns and sign the next 3-4 years of my life to the government.

Of course others in the military have degrees, but mine don't really fit in the typical military mold - not engineering, electrical, etc. Practical hands-on workmanship. I'm just a writer and the guy with the camera.

It's one of many options I'm exploring. I'm doing whatever I can to actually put what I'm good at to use and get the hell out of New York City.

I was an air force grunt to go to school...

All of the AF recruiters I knew did either enlisted or officer, but rarely both. Make sure you are talking to the right guy. Make sure you read everything. And don't sign anything you don't want to spend the next 4-6 years living with. (there is nothing worse than serving beside someone who is only counting down the days until he gets out)

If you get the journalist thing, great. but a lot of the jobs they advertised are just to get you in the door. the old bait and switch.

As far as not wanting to be a common soldier... there are already too many a$$clowns in the AF who think they are too good to do any actual work. (whether that be with a rifle, or a wrench). They certainly don't need one more. if this is your attitude, find a different career path.

you don't want to lead, you don't want to do any real work. you just want to carry a camera and tell stories about real people who are doing real leadership and real work. no wonder I hate journalists.

why don't you do yourself, and the AF a favor, and be realistic. If this is your attitude, you will not like the military, and they will not like you.

you do, and i don't.

BTW: you would make a great officer. get paid three times as much as the average grunt, and do 1/10 the work....
