fun is where its at.. fast is all relative... and my car is plenty fast.. but i wish i could have the fun a rwd v8 focus would give me... donuts.. drifting.. you name it...

I think the speculation of manual vs automatic all depends on the car and tune.

I don't know if the focus would be very good as a rear wheels drive. AWD, sure, but rear wheel ... eh.
If they would have created more of the sporty 4bangers Fords as they did the Cossie Escort, we would definitely have VW battling with us. But the new Focus ST, seems to handle quite nice for being a FWD. I did finally get a chance to test drive one ... but not in a way that I would like to drive one.  But I definitely like the appeal of RWD. I also test drove the new Subaru BRZ, wow is that nice. Not F/I, but you can feel that thing move. Ray
