Hi Daniel and Liz!

Daniel,

The wheel bearings are what you're talking about. I'm talking about the bearings in the CV Joints. The are under the boots on the end of the shaft. They are what clicks and pops when the wheel is turned. Any noise = out of spec and failing. Once the boots rupture, dirt and sand gets in there and chews up the bearings FAST.

yeah, its been a couple years since it first tore.. i will be ordering new EMPI axles today or tomorrow.

thanks for the enlightenment..

i know i need to do a major overhaul, since its been a hard (but fun) 84k since i got it.

but funds never allow it.
hopefully i will get a daily soon, so then i can take my time and revamp much of the drivetrain/suspension/chassis components.

Hard and fun? Sounds like my weekends. lol.

I know nothing about suspension short of Struts vs coilovers.

Coilovers are similar to struts in a way but are not struts.

EMPI is a good axle brand from what I've heard. Definitely get the boots. Any contamination will lead to early failure. As far as replacing, its knew lime doing a strut replacement but goes into taking off the rotors, hubs, knuckles etc. You have to slide the axle out of the trans and the wheel side being careful about the splines when you put the new one back in. I know Paul has had to replace his b4.

isn't the "dampener" part of a coilover set up a strut with the adjustable sleeve for spring travel the "coil - over" part??

hehehehee
and yes, i know there is dampening adjustability with coilovers as well..

fml. i might just take it to my shop and have my mechanic do it. don't want to deal with it and leave myself stranded.

I wouldnn't bother with roll cage or harness bar unless you go high horsepower with a turbo or something. Otherwise its just for looks with alot of extra weight. But of course this will be once you have a daily so the kraken can become dedicated racer! :) !

I would hit up the track guys on FJ such as hEat, Omnifocus and terrible1. These guys know what they're doing. Otherwise you might be wasting alot of money and time on stuff that doesn't work or isn't needed. Worst case done wrong could cause you a failure that would lead to an accident.
