Lots of smoke from exhaust, problems accelerating

Hey everyone, I have a 2000 SE Focus that's been giving me some problems since yesterday. I currently have an oil leak that's getting fixed this coming weekend, and I'm having the timing belt replaced then as well, but I thought I'd try and get a handle on what this new problem was.

Basically, when I hit the gas I get a large amount of white smoke from the exhaust, and it seems like my car doesn't want to accelerate when this happens. I've got about a quarter tank of gas in it right now, (from a fill up at about 3/4's of a tank), but there does seem to be a gas smell when this happens. It's hard to pinpoint the smell as it doesn't do it when the car is idle.

I have no issues with it starting up, only when I'm trying to accelerate. Anyways, if someone has some ideas on what the problem is, I'd like to get a heads up on what type of damage I'm in store for this weekend.

Yeah, it will. I only took it up to about 40mph, the problems with the acceleration comes in spurts. If I hit the gas and the cloud of smoke comes out, the acceleration dies off, but if I let off the gas and reapply, it'll start going.

Sounds like coolant is getting into the combustion chamber. Most likely a head gasket issue but its strange that it only spews smoke on acceleration. Is there smoke at idle as well or is it just not as heavy of smoke at idle? And is it engine temperature dependant? Meaning does the motor have to be warm before the problem occurs?

check your spark plugs and wires, I know it sounds stupid but TRUST ME! I had this exact problem with a used focus I just bought, white smoke, ran horrible, no power, etc...and it was ALL cuz the old plug wires wernt seated right. try that.

Smoke or Steam

Is that white SMOKE or is it STEAM? If it's steam I'd lean towards head gasket or cracked head. Smoke from rich fuel mixture is black. Burned oil is bluish.

It's been pretty cold here lately, and it doesn't seem to matter if I let the car warm up or not when it happens.

Jim, it's definitely white, but as to whether I'm looking at steam or smoke, I guess I can't tell. Cracked Head Gasket was another guess from a friend of mine, so I guess I'll prep for that. I'm not going to bother driving it until I can get it to the garage just in case.

Warlord, I'll check the plugs though, that would be infinitely better

look at the plugs, i would think they would be discolored if they are burning coolant
