3-Way Components???

Hi... Right now I'm considering either a Civic or a ZX5 Focus.

One of the things I'm trying to consider is how easy it will be to upgrade the audio in both cars.
The speaker locations in the Civic Sedan suck.. bottom of the door, not much room either.

The Focus seems like it has plenty room for a component system, and in fact I've seen some installs on this site.

Has anyone installed a 3 way component set in their Focus doors?
I'm checking out the 3-piece JL Audio has (XR653-CSi) and also a couple models by Focal (165V3E)

1.) Is there room? Most of these sets have a 6.5" woofer, 4" mid, 1" tweeter.

2.) Is it worth it?

My home theater speakers have (2) 6.5" woofers, (1) 5.25" mid, (1) 1" tweeter and they are great.
But in a car, you've got to compete against road noise.. would I notice a difference of a 3 way component system as opposed to a 2 way component sys?

Thanks.

More than likely you would be better off by putting 1 of the woofers in the door and have the tweet and the other woofer in the kick panel. Im sure you could fit a 3 way set in the door. Would it be easy? I doubt it. And more than likely it would take a significant amount of altering of the door and/or the door panel.

Is a 3 way set worth it? Ya, I think they are. Especially for systems that lack in the midbass area.

You can see on my webpage how easily I mounted a 2 way component set...

Common way of doing this is to mount the 6.5 in the door and put the 4 and tweet in the kick panel. The Focus front doors have almost three inches in depth and an inch in front clearance.

Ahhh.. I was hoping to fit at least the Mid and Tweeter into the door for better staging..

Putting them down in the kick panel wouldn't sound as good, I imagine.

For better staging you can also consider to add an ambient tweeter installed high up in your car, somewhere on the A pillar or on the mirror cover what you have on the door. I have a 2 way in the door (5 1/4" mid and 1" tweet) and an extra 1" tweeter in the mirror cover. The ambient ones crossed over at around 8 kHz, so the only effect you hear is that they really raise the stage.

I really noticed it about a month ago when I decided to install the ambient ones in custom fiberglass enclosures and they were off my car for about 4 weeks. After I got them back, the difference was really impressive.

I use the following tweeters for this:
http://www.bostonacoustics.com/ca_pr...p?ProductID=62

Check out the product manual on that page for a description on ambient mode set-up.

The Image Enhancement option comes from CDT Audio. It's great to see the idea is catching on, ie. Boston.

I am upgrading my MB Quarts to CDT Audio ES-620 6.5" components in the doors and then adding the UpStage System in the a-pillars. Here is all you need to know about this setup:

Cool thanks.. sounds like I'd get good results from a mid-bass woofer in the door, mid and tweeter in the kick panel, and the extra tweeters will raise the stage up and even it out.

One more thing, off topic..

If I get the trim level with the 6disc player and the audio controls on the steering column.. how easy is it to remove those extra controls and can I get a replacement steering column without a hole in it?

Thanks

Too many tweeters will just make the sound-stage worse!

DidHeFocus, the CDT UpStage and Boston systems do not double frequency ranges. I'm not quite sure how to explain it, but it will make sense if you read this page:

http://www.cdtaudio.com/stagefront_upstage_systems.htm

endokrin, as DidHeFocus mentions, you don't want to just add another set of tweeters, you would need to add one of the above mentioned systems.
