The 1988s are pretty good. The pre-88s, well, they aren't truly awful, but they aren't quite as good.

IMHO the main problem with the Fiero is that it was produced close to the all-time low point of GM quality control. It's difficult to find a Fiero that simply functions, much less drives well enough to autox without serious mechanical rehab. Another problem is that the car is the basis for numerous tacky fake Ferrari and Lambo lookalike body kits, so many of the decent ones were snapped up by kit-car builders long ago. IMHO another problem is that the V-6 in the Fiero, while decent on paper, has no top end and just doesn't sound like a sports car engine should.

That's why you get a 90's MR2 turbo if you want a mid engine car.

My brother has a 91 that's the N/A 2.2L but it's still a blast and pretty quick.

You would be in STX with a LSD.

IMHO the best way to plan an autox project car is to decide the class you want to run in, read and re-read the rules for the class multiple times, and ask plenty of questions if you don't understand any particular provisions in the rules.

Also, always remember the Top Ten things that will improve the times of any autox car, in order of priority:
  1. Tires
  2. Tires
  3. Tires
  4. Tires
  5. Driver skill and seat time
  6. Driver skill and seat time
  7. Driver skill and seat time
  8. Driver skill and seat time
  9. Suspension and brakes*
  10. Engine and transmission*
*If the car has a major mechanical issue, such as seriously worn shocks or a slipping clutch, it should be replaced. However, if the car is in basically good mechanical condition, anything you do to the suspension, engine, or tranny will have little effect compared to a good set of tires.

If you look through lots of autox-related forums and magazine articles, you may get the mistaken impression that minute details of suspension and engine setup are really important for good autox times. However, in many cases, these sorts of threads and articles are written by highly skilled drivers who already have great tires; in other words, they've already proverbially pruned the low-hanging fruit. They're after the last few tenths of a second.

Yes, what I'm trying to say is that you should buy the best tires (and widest wheels, class allowing) that you can afford. If this means forgetting the flywheel, then forget it.

Im am planning on buying dunlop z1 star specs next spring. Im not getting the torsen since i definitely dont want to be any higher than the st class. At least not at this point I would rather learn to drive before getting extreme into autocross. At some point my car will probably go to the extreme but that wont be for a few years. Im doing a clutch for sure and my neighbor works for luk so he can get me a good deal on a clutch package minus flywheel. I will be having the trans rebuilt due to a third gear grind. I thank everyone that is giving me clues as Im new into the sport.

"technically" anything other than an OE clutch puts you out of ST and into SP...just so you know.
