Svts rape in their stock class with a good driver and tires. taking them out of stock results in a much less competitive car.

i just wanna throw this out there...a mk1/mk2/mk3 GTi or a vw beetle (older) both coul be very competitive.

The only Fiero worth a crap is the 88--those are nice, even in just stock class.

ive seen people who use a tdi beetle or jetta turbo diesel dump the exhaust with just a massive downpipe a custom tune and tires they coast at 300lbs of torque in 3rd-4th gear the whole track pretty cool not much effort lol

I think that it will end up being a miata theyre a bit cheaper and I dont see a mini being an autox only car like a cheap miata.

I agree- I'd go for a Miata, all the way.

An 88 CRX Si or 89-91 Civic Si is another contender, but they're becoming difficult to find in decent shape. Most have been beaten to death and/or modified in questionable ways by teenagers. OTOH Miatas are often purchased as weekend toys by mature buyers, so it's a lot easier to find them in low-mileage, relatively unmolested condition.

Since it sounds like your mind is made up on the Miata, it becomes a question of which Miata. Since I'm somewhat of a Miata junkie, here's what I'd recommend for a Miata racer on a budget.
  1. 90-97 Miata in STS. Minor mods make it fun. Two notes, however. First, the Torsen limited-slip diff used in many 94-97 1.8L cars is illegal in the class. (The gods at the SEB deemed it an unfair advantage. ) If you want a 1.8L, it's best to start with a base model, 95-97 Power Steering Package, 97 Touring, or 97 STO unless you want to do a diff swap. Second, the 90-91 models are at a minor disadvantage due to the lack of some chassis bracing, but it's not a drastic difference.
  2. 99-05 Miata in STS. Slightly more expensive than 90-97 and slightly less competitive due to higher curb weight. OTOH low-mileage cars are easier to find.
  3. 94-97 R Package in ES. Allowable mods are limited, race tires are required if you want to finish in the top 3/4 of the field at a major event. R Packages are somewhat difficult, albeit not impossible, to find due to slow sales; 94-95 models are far more numerous than 96-97 (less than 200 of the latter were sold).
  4. 94-97 non-R Torsen-equipped car in ES. You probably won't trophy at the Solo II Nationals in it, but they're not that much worse than R Packages at a local level, they're a lot easier to find, and power steering is nice.
  5. 07+ MSR in CS. Fun, but price of admission is a bit steep.
  6. 99-05 in CS. Fun, but no longer very competitive.
  7. 90-05 in CSP. Fun, but level of modifications required to run in the top of the field at a major event will cost serious dough and render the car unstreetable. Most serious SP competitors have to trailer their cars to events. (This is a central irony of the "Street" Prepared classes in general. )
Have fun!
