To me you did the right thing you avoided the wreck, and you made an attempt to give the places back, the Miata chose not to take it

The helmet has a special meaning for many drivers. How important is it to you? - It protects my head.

Do you have any special rituals when the helmet is concerned like many have? - I wipe it so that I can see better.

That's a way tough call, but I agree with the rest of the comments.
You gave the Miata plenty of time to pass you and get back up to speed.

Did you ask any officials at the track about your concerns after the fact?

BTW...That's a lot of cars on track!
I've been to Miller Motorsports Park a couple times for a HPDE,
but what you're doing there is a bit crowded for this newbie.

Oh...why the few blips on the rev limiter before you shift?
Seems to me your losing some time doing that.

Frankly, no. It was discussed between me and the other driver, I really didn't give it another thought.

It was the second day of a three day weekend.

There was plenty of time for the officials to approach me if they felt I was out of line. There were plenty of drivers that were cited for this infraction in other race groups during the event, I doubt they let me slide without even a chat if they felt this was a borderline call on my part.

Yep, and I have data to back it up.

according to my traqmate session I was below 0.2g accel for ~7 seconds after hitting my MIN speed of 23MPH. At that 7 second mark I was just hitting 60MPH

Max accel for my car is about .45g to .55g, so that means I was at half or below that figure for 7 seconds.......

You are correct sir! But you have to appreciate that I don't have a shift light yet, and was working on about 5.5 hours sleep. The fuel rail sprung a leak (ongoing problem, long story...) after my first test/tune session the day before. I located a fuel rail at a dealer near allentown PA, a friend fetched it for me, but I had to meet him late at night. Got back to the hotel at about 1:30 AM!

I guess, but it did not seem that crowded to me. I wish I had video from the qualifying session. I was going 3 wide out of the boot with an integra and some other hot hatch......

Brian is correct, sort of...

I am a long time SCCA racer (I might even be one of the guys who started doing this before you were born...)

From my vantage point, the important part to this equation is that you INITIATED and EXECUTED overtaking PRIOR to the Yellow flag being displayed to you.

As a result, the pass was legal. You had no obligation relinquish the position back to the Miata. Further, the Miata - being passed legally could not not overtake you under the yellow flag.

Great Driving!

p.s. For those who suggested that you might ask an official for an opinion... Don't borrow trouble. Sometimes, the answer you get may not be the one you want. So, keep your trap shut. Trust me, if you were naughty, the officials WILL find you.

Well, that's the fuzzy part...

IF you stop the video and look real careful at the flagstation way at driver's left on the outside of the turn, you can see a waving yellow.

I'm not 100% sure when it came out, and I don't remember seeing it.

It's a pretty slow corner, and I was coming up on the inside. I was just minding the position of the Miata with my peripheral vision, and looking ahead around the corner to the right. Judging by how late and hard everyone got on the brakes, I don't know who saw what, but as I approached the apex I just saw cars swerving and braking to avoid the SRF carnage and debris!

I was kind of proud to think I came through that mess as a rookie without tweaking my fenders, or adding to the carnage.

Same goes for the first spin I had during a race back in July. When I knew I could not recover, I dumped both feet in. The car just slid in a nice striaght line, and I stopped high on the track at the entrance to a big sweeper. I corded a tire, but stayed out of harms way. (I dread the idea of shooting back into traffic after a spin. )

Yes indeed they would, and I had no reason to go looking for trouble.....

Thanks for the kind words and sound advice.

I redid my video with music and traqmate overlay. (link updated)

Looks like I have my answer regarding the pass, 14-0 votes that I handled this OK, so I'm happy with that....

Thanks!

I just ran my last event for the year. I was @ Lime Rock with EMRA on the 23rd, and ran a 41 lap race.

I was in a class of 1, but finished overall at about 8-9 in the small bore group, just one lap off the leaders, and several laps ahead of the back of the pack.

The on this chilly overcast fall day in CT, the fofo was turning times mainly in the 1:04.5 > 1:06 ranges with about 9 laps sub 1:05. Since NEI stangs were running 1:02's and 1:03's that's not too bad in my book.

Man this is the first time I have even checked out this section of FF and I know nothing about this sport but this looks really fun!! You did an awesome job man. I didnt realize these options were available to us guys with a focus without a turbo or SC. Now I'm gonna look for some other vids to watch and check out the rally races as well.
Also, about 3:30 into the vid, whats that small square looking car in front of you?
