How to re-install the serpentine belt

I just finished installing underdrive pulleys on my 2002 SVT Focus. However, try as I might, I can not get the belt back on. I'm sure that I'm installing the belt properly as I matched up the route on our 2001 ZX3. Is there a way to loosen the belt tensioner? The main bolt (15 MM I think) just pulls of the the entire pulley.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I'm now without a car!

The tensioner is a pain, very difficult without the right long tool. easiest way we've found is to jack up the passenger side and take off the wheel. take off the lower pulley cover (2 10mm bolts, black piece from underneath), then find the tensioner and push it up with the heel of your hand from underneath while someone else pulls it onto the last pulley. Easiest to do upper front-most pulley last. Hope this helps,

hi

i just did this, i fought with it for a while. this s how i did it. i went to sears and got the longest 15mm wrench i could buy ($13) i routed the belt over everything buy the ps pump, i grabbed the pulley bolt and moved it toward the firewall until i could move no more, i had a friend use a pry bar and hold it in place. i took the wrench off and regripped the bolt again going toward the firewall until he got it around the ps pump pulley. what a bitch!!!!

hope this helps

your not supposed to loosen the bolt on the tensioner pulley. its spring loaded, just put a wrench on there, and push it, the pulley will move, slip the belt on, and then let the tensioner go back in place.

Ok, I finally got the belt back on. Like everyone said, this definitely a two man job. One of us got under the car and pushed the belt tensioner up (at first it didn't even move!) and the other pulled hard to put the belt over the upper most pulley.

It was worth it as I installed the focus central underdrive pulleys and noticed a nice performance boost. My tale of woe for changing the small alternator pulley is a story for another time...
