Question 02 SVT VS 98 pontiac gtp

I know this kid that wants to run at the track. Im curious what they run, and if anyone has run one before. Its completely stock.

The SVT has short ram, test pipe to full borla exhaust. dog bone mount, aftermarket suspension, OZ 17's, ford racing wires

would i have to get a chip first?

you dont need a chip. a predator and a tune would probably be nice but it wouldnt make a huge difference with a basically stock engine. how long is the track youre going to? and there is no such thing is a 98 grand prix GTP. they didnt introduce them until 1999 lol. you will get eaten alive. sorry! those things make massive torque and power for basically a family car. 240hp @ 5200rpms and 280lbs-tq @ 3600rpms. you MIGHT get him off the line depending if he has traction control on or off but it wont take long for him to reel you in. if he has T/C off and spins really bad off the line you MIGHT get him in the 1/8th but he will still reel you in without breaking a sweat in the 1/4. stock they are capable of getting in the low 14s in the 1/4. lightly modified they can get in the high 13s

I think it will be a close run until halfway down the quarter mile. Years ago, I did manage to stay about a car's length ahead of a GTP sedan, but that was in my N/A modded Talon. He reeled me in in the last 100 ft to trip the lights by about a bumper length.

So, if that old fat pig of mine could do that, a good launch and some good driver skills should make you raise an eyebrow or two.

You'll have no chance with a GTP. Even off the line it will take you.

the GTP gave my old 5.0 mustang a run for it's money... and i had a bunch of mods including 3.73 gears in the diff. my car would do 0-60 in about 5.5 seconds.

so... there's no way the svtf would take a gtp in a straight line race.

ya they're pretty quick. You're not gonna beat one straight in a Focus w/o forced induction
