Cracked rear springs?

I have an 02 wagon that is loud up front when it's cold but quiets down when it's warmd up. I brought it to Ford this morning and there could be various gasket or other exhaust leaks. The thing that is bothering me is that they checked the car over and claim that the rear springs are cracked and them and the struts need replacing. The car has 126,000 miles on it.
Has any one had rear spring problems like this on the wagons and if so is it commom place?
Thanks.

Wow, this is the first time I've heard about spring cracking/breaking on a focus I would understand about the struts/shocks but not the springs. Have you checked them yourself?

First for me too. I'd say watch the buy/sell/trade section and get yourself another set and replace 'em yourself. The rear is pretty simple.

Spring steel is brittle. A crack can start for a variety of reasons. agree with SuperFlea that your shocks are due if OEM. What I don't know is how they detected the crack unless its so bad it's clearly visible and therefore real close to failing.

Edit: MisterJohnson >> In consideration of the year of the car/location and the 'stuck bolt' issue. Maybe he should think about letting the dealer correct this?

Hey just wanted to bump this to ask a relevant question.

Did you replace the Control Arm bolts in the front or back, or the front sub-frame bolts? I read it was a good idea to anytime taking them out.

I'm building my parts list and will be going through almost this same procedure soon as all parts come in.

Hey Bro,

Nope, didn't replace the bolts. Reused the same ones. I honestly think you don't have to replace them unless they show unusual ware.

Awesomness! I guess that takes care of my list then. I think I'll do tie-rod ends while I'm at it since I hear they can go bad on high-mileage cars like mine, pushing 120k.

Hopefully my rear LCA's aren't broke up like that. I'm hoping to just have a shop weld in some extra metal there.

Oh no! The photos no worky anymore! Would it be possible to get them fixed? I'll print it off this time, lol. I'm getting all parts ordered and gearing up to do this soon, with some added goodies. Yikes! I'm nervous. Can I just drive down to you and have you do it? lol
