Yes a modded GTI or Jetta will beat a stockish SVT. But notice you stated that it was modded. However as stock for stock goes I believe they are very close in performance. I believe the outcome would be decided by the drivers skill.

skilled driving makes up for alot of hp shortcomings (to a point)

Gti is a great little car - easily to mod (especially in 1,8t form) - but focus owns it suspension wise

no offense but the guy in the gti must have been a shittty driver i just sold my 2001 vr6 jetta it had a cold air, catback and denso plugs and it ran a 14.6 with the 75 shot of nos i was down to a 12.8 i have an 04 svtf now with driving them both without a doubt the vr6 would beat a svt any day, stock to stock that is

Yeah, those VR6's are faster than an SVTF, but, as some said, the SVTF would win on a road course.

They are definitely nice cars... I'd agree with ZETEC3 in that the R32 is an awesome car, but, if you don't have the money, then I'd recommend the 1.8t- a powerful car for its weight in comparison to the VR6, with more options regarding mods.

Must have been a bad driver for you to have got him off the line. The SVTF is such a dog off the line, modded or stock. I would think the GTI would have more than that, esp on take off. Well good run anyway, sounds like you had a blast running him.

I once got my ass handed to me by what appeared to be a modded GTI 1.8t - he obviously had an exhaust, he had debadged the hatch, etc, but I only know what I could see since he left me so fast I couldn't even catch up to ask what he had done to it. To be fair though he did get the jump on me, I had no idea he was going to gun it when the light changed, but I guess he wanted to see what an SVT could do... I sure embarrassed myself on that one.
