HOW-TO: WuNgUn's automatic push-button starter
This is a very parts-specific How-To, in that I use, for example, a DEI Viper alarm, a multi-timer PCB, and an Allen-Bradley switch to pull it off...
I think any DEI product with remote start will work for this...just consult your installation manual for proper wiring. If you don't have a DEI alarm/remote start, then this isn't for you! I'm certain, any remote starter only kits can be made to work just as well, but without an alarm, or at the very least, a hidden 'kill-switch', you maybe asking for trouble! Also note, this setup recommends complete removal of the ignition key barrel and wheel lock. If your not comfortable with this concept, again, this isn't for you. I highly recommend using a DEI ignition disable relay as part of your alarm setup. What this does is, when the car is armed, one side of the relay is powered up. At this stage, the relay isn't consuming power...however, if the starter button is then pressed, the relay sees full power, and 'opens', breaking the circuit to the remote starter, thereby not allowing the car to start. Even if your not doing this, it's highly recommended that you still use the IGN disable relay as part of your alarm. The multi-timer I bought over a year ago...this makes this auto-start setup fully automatic. It can be had at DigiKey, here: http://parts.digikey.com/1/parts/407...-diy-5141.html ![]() The AB switch is a 2-button (start/stop) industrial unit, which uses snap-in 'cartridges' for the contacts...either normally open or normally closed, with any 2 combinations of cartridges available for each button. ![]() These can likely be had on Ebay with some searching...to buy new would be very costly. What is ABSOLUTELY needed for this switch to work however, is a N/O contact on the 'Start' and both a N/O and N/C contact for the 'Stop'. And you'll need some Bosch automotive relays...4 in total. 2 of them send power to the ACC and IGN leads of the car, and 2 of them are used to make a latch relay. It is constructed like this... ![]() I won't go into how it works, simply to say when it sees a pulsed input, it latches ON the other relay to provide a constant OUT. Once the ground is removed from the right-side relay, the latch is reset. Here is the design schematic... ![]() Now here is how it works: The 'Start' contact is connected to 'ground'...when the DEI sees 2 ground pulses at the 'remote start activation input', the DEI remote start is put into action...(Note: this is the same input it sees from the remote keyfob, only we're tapping into the wire instead.) Once starting is initiated, the DEI sends 2 light pulses to the amber LED (optional: dash mounted) to let you know the starting sequence has commenced, and the starter motor is about to be activated. At the same time, the H2/1 sends a - pulse output to the latch relays. This powers up the relays, which in turn, send power to the ACC/IGN relays to turn on your car. Now the DEI sends power to it's built-in ACC and IGN relays to 'turn on' your car, which should already be tapped into the ACC/IGN leads of your car. (Note: I'm leaving these in place on my car, in case the DEI needs 'feedback' that power has been sent to the circuits. It won't hurt anything to leave them attached.) At the same time, this ACC output from the DEI relay powers up the multi-timer, which begins it's (programmable) 5 second count-down... Once power is ON, the DEI goes ahead and starts your car... Now remember, at this time, the car is running (assuming it starts within 5 seconds!), the DEI is still in remote start mode, and power is also being applied seperately to the ACC and IGN... Now when the multi-timer sees 5 seconds lapse, it sends a - pulse out to the hoodpin remote starter disable wire. I chose this for simplicity, and the fact that it must be a ground signal. (Note: when this wire sees a ground signal, it shuts down the DEI remote start completely. Same as if the hood was open...the remote start is disabled). This sends a pulse down the factory rearm lead, which in turn is used to flash a green dash mounted LED to inform you the remote starter sequence has ended. At this point, your car should be running without the aid of the DEI. It will continue running for as long as the latch relays see 'ground'. This is where the 'Stop' buttons normally closed contact is used. The latch relays get their ground connection thru this button. Once this circuit is broken by pushing the stop button, the latch relays reset, and in turn, kills the power to the ACC and IGN relays, which shuts down the car... Now, as a convenience feature, I've also added the ability to powerup the ACC and IGN in your car without having to start it. i.e. if you want to roll down your power windows without having to start your car. As you'll note in the schematic, the starter button is also connected directly to the multi-timer. If the start button is held down for 5 seconds, the multi-timer is powered and it sends a pulse, after the lapsed time, to the latch relays, which in turn, power up the ACC and IGN. And of course, this feature is also turned off with the stop button. This is possible, because the DEI is only looking for 2 pulses to start the car. If it sees only 1 pulse, or a steady ON, it's ignored. Likewise, the multi-time only runs when it sees constant power for 5 seconds. Pulses just switch it on then off. The button must be held for the programmed 5 seconds for the multi-timer to send an output. Also note, the multi-timer's output is also connected to the hoodpin lead. But with the DEI remote starter not enabled, this pulse is again, ignored... At ANY time, the startup sequence can be aborted with the stop button. This is where the normally open contact is used. When pressed, this contact sends a 'ground' signal to the same hoodpin disable lead, stopping the DEI from starting. And of course, the DEI also uses your brake pedal as a disabler. Also note, that this isn't installed in my car yet! Just waiting for the weather to get better! |

No, key or key turning needed, and no need to hold down and release the start button when the car starts. |

I'm removing the key/barrel/lock and using the DEI 555 PATS by-pass. If you already have a remote starter on your car, it probably uses some sort of PATS by-pass already...

i understand that. ive installed remotestarts for 6 years, however you will have a steering wheel lock, are you disabling that aswell. if so i actually like this push button thread. i never understood why people added a push button to their vehicle but still needed the key. it sounds like your doing it right!

That is very cool and a very good job on the write up. I would suggest some more pics during the process.
I have a DEI Viper Alarm but the one with out the Remote Start ... I might have to look into this now. -Ray-

Okay, all the components are ready to install...timer, relays and switch.
All that is needed are the wiring connection to the car...12V+ for the ACC/IGN relays and latch relay, and ground connections for the switch, timer and relays... And of course, tapping into the DEI alarm at the specified connections... Here is the timer, latch relays and power relays... ![]() ...and with the switch... ![]() ![]() YELL wires on the Bosch relays are 12V+ in, BLU wires tap into the ACC and IGN circuits... Tested and working perfectly! |

Build 'em? Not likely...and if I did, I'd want too much for them. :) I'm willing to offer support though, and that's free... I was thinking also, this could be used for a manual, push-button start setup without the DEI autostart and timer board...which simplifies things. Keep the latch relays for the ACC/IGN and add another relay to the start button for the starter motor... |
