02 Focus Shifter cables

02 Focus Shifter cables have come loose. THe black cable is ok but the "white" cable will not stay on the ball at all. SO I am guessing I will ahve to replace the entire cable. ANyone done this? It looks fairly straight forward just getting thru the firewall could be my only hang up.

Anything I should be awre of? or how much the cables cost? May just take it to a local shop too.

I haven't done it, I can do simple car repairs but nothing like that, however my shifter cable broke, according to the shop I got it from. I could only get it into 1st 3rd and 5th, and I had to jam it in there real hard. They said it was fixed and I didn't even leave the parking lot. Within a half hour it was "fixed" again and I made it 2 miles before it broke again and I was stuck in third. Then it was finally fixed for real a week later. After this, my 3rd gear syncro is messed up and I need to double clutch into 3rd or else it grinds. Now I need a new tranny.

SO judging from that story I would say I want to get this fixed quick! I don't want to have to buy a new tranny

Sounds like your shifter cable ends have corroded and worn out. This is common as the ball cup inside the plastic rusts and the plastic fatigues and breaks eventually. I am assuming you have a manual transmission...
The two shifter cables ends have removable clip on ball linkages that connect to the cable and to the levers on your transmission. You can purchase these cable linkages from an online ford parts store like www.silverstatefordparts.com (I use them as they are the cheapest online Ford parts I can find) or locally at a dealership which is usually more expensive. I would go ahead and replace both linkages since you will be in that area anyway. One is black and the other is white. They both have a push clip integrated that allows you to disconnect them from the cable wire. It may take you a while to see/feel how to take them off but once they are off then putting the new ones on isnt so bad. You can reach them by taking off the entire air cleaner box and leaning heavy into the engine compartment to reach down to them, OR you could jackup the drivers side front and take the drivers side front tire off and reach them from underneath.

Here are the part no's:
The YS4Z7412JA retails for 22.00, should cost 15.55 plus shipping
The YS4Z7412HA retails for 8.87, should cost 6.27 plus shipping.

I think there is a post on the forum somewhere with pictures. If not I will see if I can get pictures for you.
Good luck!
Mike

Savage, thanks alot for you help, we were working with them earlier today and I was wondering if the ends could be removed from the cables. That would make it a ton easier!

BTW, what did you use to get part numbers, I have an electronic manual for the cars but it doesn't seem to give me part numbers. DO you have the shop book?

This is a very frequent and annoying problem. I'm on my FOURTH set of cables in 45,000 miles. The cables are trash and fall apart every 10,000 - 20,000 miles. As for the replacement, my mechanic said they clock at 3.5 hours but it was pretty tricky so it took him four. It's not trivial to get them out. I was quoted $110 for the cables and three hours for labor.

Since the cables fail at an alarming rate, you should be able to find a place that can swap them out. Getting them is another problem, they're not exactly easy to find so you may have to wait a bit to get them.
