Advice on buying 00 focus station wagon

I am considering buying a 2000 Ford Focus station wagon as a first car for my soon to be driving daughter. It has the ZETEC engine, 69,350 miles, power windows, power locks, AM/FM/ tape, alloy rims, 2 new front tires, new front brakes, new front wheel bearing and hub. Needs 2 new rear tires (worn on inside) and possibly a new TPS (mechanic checked the code because engine light was on) Dealer will sell it for $6000, no less. Any advice? Would you buy it? Should I be concerned about the mileage? Thanks in advance.

Looks like a good starter for you're daughter.

With all you described it seems a little high but I honestly don't know if wagon's are more expensive. If they shouldn't...I would ask for $5000. Check and see if it's a ZTW.....I would also be concerned if the engine light is on and the dealer tries to sell it like that....

Thanks for the reply. How would I know if it is a ZTW? The dealer did state that the engine light was on because of the throttle position sensor and that for a higher selling price they would fix it. My mechanic confirmed that it was the TPS which he advised fixing after buying the car.

Yeah the CEL would definitely be something I would want to check. If the light is on, something must be wrong, even if it is a sensor, I would want it fixed before I got it. Most car dealerships here that I know, always make sure the car is up to par (no problems) before they go on the lot.

..that's a ton of bullshit! I could repair that problem in 5 seconds and for free. You just have to place the TPS in a different position. If the TPS is dead, that's another issue.

I wouldn't buy from that dealer.....sorry!

i think that is over priced. i would use kbb.com and check out what it lists it for all values (trade in, private party and the other) it seems like it is a shit box dealer if they are selling it with the check engine light on...

I don't think it is a ztw, but you could tell if it was, it will be on the tailgate, it will say se or ztw back there. They were basically the same, the ztw had a few more bells and whistles. I have a ztw , very nice car, I wouldn't worry about the milage, as long as the oil has been done you are okay. The CEL, I would let them know you are having the tps replaced and if the light doesn't go out it is coming back, or just have all the codes read by a ford dealer before you buy the car. If that is what your buddy did, then okay, I would buy it..Sure cheaper is always better, but 6,000 isn't crazy IMO. Good luck.

I appreciate all of the replys. The back tailgate does not have ZTW on it. Kelly Blue Book say private party price of $5800. Dealer originally wanted $7,900 but came down to $6000. My mechanic used a device to plug into the car to read the codes. He did think the TPS code was that big of an issue. Did a CarFax report which checked out fine. Just be little concerned with mileage at 70,000

I have a 2000 focus wagon man, make sure all recall is fix before you buy and should consider having the light thing fix before buying~~

I had many small problem in the initial ownership, but I make sure everything is fix before warranty are over. Now the warranty are over, I don't have a problem yet, but i do take extra care on the car...
