Can the xcal3 read a/f? If so, when I get mine from Tom I'd like to do this in order for Tom to be able to tweak it to make it just right.

you need to buy a wideband controller with a 5v output and input that to the x3, then set it up in livelink.

If my pre computer engine knowledge is still valid, increases in performance equate to increased efficiency thus increased MPG. The problem results from having 200 horsepower and using it all, all the time. If you drive with the same technique and the engine is more efficient MPG goes up.

[QUOTE=bluefront;2496664]I'll consider buying a "Tune", when a strictly fuel economy tune becomes available. . .
Since I haven't seen anything of the sort for the Focus..... perhaps such a "Tune" is not possible. YEAH, OR maybe because it's already pretty much "there" with the stock tune, you know, the "optimum compromise" between power and effeciency. MPG. very beaten up topic around here especially the last couple years. My view, on a scale of 1 - 10, all the tuning-tweek-tricks you can imagine combined ((short of extreme stuff like water injection, or (illegal) removing the CAT and retuning for that)) get's you between a 2 or 3 at best VERSUS, HOW you drive, being like a 7 or 8 in terms of mpg gain. There is no magic bullet trick or tune. Proper maintenance and drive like you don't care if you get there 5 minutes later.

S N A P. It's like the old myth that 4 barrel Carbs used more gas than a 2 when just the opposite was true. More Power WAS there when you ASKED for it but by keeping a light foot on the gas, only the 2 (of 4) SMALLER barrels would open up, using fuel in easy running more effieceintly than a regular 2 barrel ("bbl"?) carb. I think a good tune is similar in that respect. SRI, same deal. More power when you need it, & more efficeincy all the time as long as you can resist the lure to romp on it.

and all this engine tweeking is only going to effect MPG within a RELATIVELY narrow range anyway, (5 to at best 15%). Relative to what? >You want to REALLY buttkick you mpg? Change your driving habbits.

With all the so-called mpg enhancers installed that claim big fuel savings, you have to stop every 100 miles or so, to siphon-off gas to keep it from spllling out of the overflow vent!
Seriously, give me an eco-boost turbo, or give me death! No, seriously, I want an eco-boost turbo now! My 2010 SES sedan needs SOMETHING! Anything! A sheep in wolf's clothing! An auto tranny! Oh, the pain! It handles nicely, looks sharp...but where's the beef? Is there any hope for this bolt-on bimbob? ![]() Charles |
