I too came to this thread via a search for the same problem. I did have some exposed wires in the hatchback (repaired,) but it wasn't until I replaced all the bulbs in the hatch light that the break lights started acting normally.

Glad it helped. BTW....I was a CUYAHOGA FALLS JAYCEE back int he 90's, before I moved to Southern Ohio.
