How To Read Engine Codes

My car has a rough idle when cold , 13 mins the problem goes away. Is the only time that you would get a code would be when the CEL comes on. If not how can i get the code read, just called auto zone and they said they do not read the code for you , you have to buy a unit.

You are correct. The only time you would get a code is when the CEL was triggered by some kind of sensor. So if there is no CEL, then there is no code. You can always go to Autozone to get your CEL code if you CEL is on. But, store policy here in NC may differ over there in CA. You can ask this question in the regional forum.
