wow yeah so I cleaned up under the rear seat (gummy bears, jelly beans, teddy grams...wtf) and spare tire (awfully dirty!) guess what I found that I didn't know I had.... a freakin trunk light! wtf?! well whatever, I pulled the bulb out, and guess what... it's the same type that goes in the front side markers, so I just grabbed my little box of those lights and popped one in.... now I have light :B

I'm not done yet.....just finished mounting a fire extinguisher (Kidde #FX5 II from Walmart $12). This model is for flammable liquids and electrical fires). It's a perfect fit in that unused area on the left side, using the included bracket and some plastic panel clips. If I ever remove that trunk trim piece, I'll secure the bracket more firmly. But it should be ok as is.

And I secured my tool/spare part bag using a coiled spare tire cable (also from Walmart). This cable is pad-locked to the unused loop on the back of the seat. Anybody who breaks into your trunk can steal anything...given enough time. This cable will slow him down quite a bit...might save your tools.

wow..... keep flowing with the great ideas! that's a wonderful use for the fire extinguisher, by the way. You could use it for any kind of fire in your car (which is obviously why you got it) or if some poor person's car catches on fire next to you, you can hurry and put it out that is, if you really care

oh yeah, and it just looks cool sitting over there.....

Here's what the hatch reflectors look like at night......I'm standing about 30 feet back with a small flashlight. You'd think there were lights up there....

Here are a few more mods you've never seen....

A water leak alarm system for the trunk (I'll probably put another under AC evaporator at the pass foot-well). This will detect water entry into the trunk, before it causes any problems. Leaks back here usually end up by the spare tire. This device (Home Depot $10) runs off a 9v battery, has a loud alarm that continues as long as there's moisture, and has an external sensor on a 6' wire. I mounted the controller by the tire also, but you could put it anywhere.

This next photo shows the 1/2" foam pads I have under the spare, and around the opening (noise dampening). A set of jumper cables can be stored back here around the spare tire.

And I bought a new tool bag (Lowes $19)..... this one is slightly larger than the previous bag, and has a lock arrangement for the zipper opening. The pad-locked cable is attached to the rear of the bag with stainless cable ties.

Last for today.....I installed some brass grommets at the edge of the trunk carpet. This allows the carpet to be held up out of the way, for removing the spare. Grommets are an easy install with a small kit....Happy Modding.

do you have to test your extinguisher or replace it yearly? i'm not sure about how all that works. I like all the ideas man, but I think the only ones I would use are the extinguisher and the foam padding... you are right about all that noise! I put sound dampening down, but it only does so much.
