If they banned ALL forms of distractions then people wouldn't be driving at all. The number of distractions a driver comes across are too many to count.

In the link, they list what is considered a distraction, such as passengers, food, drinks and so on. I'm surprised WA hasn't banned cupholders in cars.

Then European cars wouldn't have to be modified for the states. Wikipedia should not be used for reference in most arguments (as any college teacher or professor will tell you.) Fact of the matter is, driving a car is dangerous whether we think it is or not. People are making these laws to help reduce the possible collisions that can occur from people getting distracted on the phone. If it were up to me, I'd get rid of advertisements on the freeway too. It's not about taking away personal freedoms. Not in the sense of some military/dictatorship kind of thing. It's been decided that it's too dangerous to allow people to freely to it, so they made a law against it. A phone call can wait until the car is stopped. We still have voice-mail. The beauty of a text is that you don't have to reply right away. I don't know about all this liberal this or that, I'm not big on politics. We have laws in place because people are UNABLE to live with 100% complete freedom without somehow endangering or imposing on someone else. This is why we create these governments, to help manage our lives. Our system may not be perfect, but it's one of the best around (or so I've been told... ) Our lives are carefree by comparison to many out there. There are many things that can be improved.

Wikipedia is fantastic. Everything they reference is in the bottom of every article they put up. I just find the nanny state mentality of WA a bit shocking since I'm from Texas. Just making conversation.

some people dont know how to drive and talk at the same time... I once saw this lady try to turn into the shoulder with her blinker MULTIPLE times thinking it was another lane then swerving back on the road. Thought she was drunk but got a closer look and she was having a very active conversation.

I never have issues talking to people while driving, even if its on my phone. If i need to concentrate on driving, i stop talking for a second then get back to them. Very simple thing to do. Really though, theres a LOT of crappy drivers. IMO the DOL should be doing some sort of retesting every X years like they do for airplanes. Would create more jobs too ;)

I'm all for conversation, don't get me wrong. But you kinda jumped in there with "The laws here are stupid" and call it conversation. I get the frustration but that's not the best conversation starter... We can all have a reasoned discussion about whether we agree or disagree with whatever laws are around but a good conversation maybe starts with "What's up with the no cell phone while driving laws?" kind of line. Then you open up to discussion.

I don't have problems driving and using my phone. Simply because it effects other people doesn't mean it effects me. So sure, swerve at me. It just makes you an and me laughing at you while I'm on the phone.

If I were to spot a drunk driver or someone driving and using their phone, can I call someone about that? lol

Yes. Phones can be used during an emergency. You can also dial a number if needed. Emergency vehicles and tow truck drivers are legal and exempt from this no hands free law. Heh.
