Lifters in Duratecs are solid-bucket style without adjustment shims.

With the engine cold, remove the valve cover, and bump the starter lightly to get the heel (the round, smaller diameter part) of a cam lobe directly over a lifter, and measure the clearance with a quality, flat-blade feeler gauge. You’ll have to do this for all 16 valves.

Write the clearances down as you go; it’s helpful to do a quick sketch of the lifter positions to write the clearance measurements next to. You’ll need to provide the numbers to the parts counter techs so they can get you the right size lifter(s) to replace any that are too loose or too tight.

Then you get to remove cams, extract the troublesome lifter(s) and replace everything. Have fun with that part.

p.s.: Happy trails, Carl!

err yeah all that sounds insane to me and reading the All Data sounds insane for someone who knows nothing about cars to dig in and do :X Though measuring with the head off doesnt seem that daunting at all... Just need to barrow a torque wrench from a friend.

Buy a turbo kit from F/W's & you get a free Exedy stage 1 clutch kit= for both the Zetec & Dura-tech, bummer part is it's from the 12th thru the 15th only. Very temping. I was going that way a couple week's ago, but that would delete what little saving's I have. I was figuring about 4700- 4800. when it was all said & done. So I orderd their header/flex-pipe/ stealth muffler & a flasher, w/ egr delete, disabled rear oxygen sensor & another program to run 87. That should give me another 10 hp & 15lbs of grunt.

Made it to Nebraska a couple nights ago. Long drive through construction, traffic and other obstacles. LOL. We are only half way, though.

be thankful for the ATX. Thats about the only time i miss my old car is when im in traffic. Thats the way i learned to drive a manual best though. First day bringing the car home, got stuck twice on i5 and the whole way south on 167 lol. Pleased to say, ive yet to stall the car while driving. I have grinded gears though :(

got my first offer for a settlement on the accident that totaled the car. They want to give me $2100 and after medical bills and percentage taken from attorney, ill get $500 take home. My brother, who was in the car with me, was offered more LOL. Not like i had to jump through hoops to get myself into a car and they wouldnt provide proof for me that the car was totaled.

So i guess you could say im a few thousand short of the FSW turbo kit, suspension, wheels, and clutch.

Good luck with the insurance companies and lawyer thing, Dustin. Personally, Iíve never had a good experience whenever those two things have come together in my life.
