Cost of Catalytic Converter Replacement

A co-worker needs to get the catalytic converter replaced in her 2004 Focus, the garage wants to charge her $1800 and personally I think this is way way way too much. I found the converter online in the $250 range. So whats the deal? Is there some PITA procedure that requires over $1500 in labor or is there something else that would justify this cost? What should the price be if this is excessive.

pretty self explanitory to replace... check the how to forum on here... three bolts connect to the manifold... and two bolts to the flexpipe... the flexpipe flange is gona cause you the trouble, cuz of weather and the bolts being seized... also you have 2 bolts for the cat bracketunderneath... you'll see its easier than you think... DEF NOT worth over a friggen thousand dollars to pay for

$1800 for a cat replacement? Are you freakin kidding? Even the Ford dealer won't charge a third of that quote. Good god, tell her to take to a place that's not going to gouge her pocketbook.

If the car has less than 80,000 miles it is covered under warranty from Ford. Check that first.

I replaced my Cat by myself too. I had the same problem of prices, I had $900 -$1200 offers, I did the whole thing in one afternoon for $250. you need to watch out for the inner gasket/seal thing between the manifold and Cat. we managed to reuse mine but I couldnt find one in town for sale. other than that, we took out 2 exhaust hangers because they wouldnt fit and I have had no problems since.

right now I am trying to figure out parts, almost all of the cats for a 2003 SE say they are for a "3" engine code. this SE has a "Z" engine code which should be a 2.3L DOHC PZEV, does this use the same cat? I can't seem to find any other cats listed.

I put the high flow rad cat converter on my 03 Zetec focus. I bought it for around 300 dollars. Installation is simple. Just a couple of bolts. Definately not worth paying 1800 dollars to do.

or you can go to pretty much any junkyard and pic one up for cheap as the fofo is a common car, shouldn't be hard to find!
