i found that playing cards work very well when painting rims with the tires still on.. just stick the cards in between the rim and tire

Helpful thread.......I just refinished a set of Contour wheels using similar techniques. But the inside of these wheels (almost 10 years old) was so dirty, that sanding by hand would have taken a week. So I mounted the wheels (one at a time) on the car, and ran the thing about 1500rpms......then used 80 grit sanding sheets on the inside (by hand). Then I used 500 grit on the outer rims, and the tire sealing lips. This cut the sanding time down to nothing, and left a factory looking finish. Then I painted it....(the spokes were smoothed down by hand).

This is easy to do.....but be careful. Not for the faint-of-heart.

I clear-coated my wheels after the paint job, using the same paint as the OP photo. Be very careful that the humidity is under 50% when you use clear.....otherwise it'll get a cloudy finish (probably). It takes a week or more for the paint to really harden. I'd suggest waiting that long before putting the tires back on, and using the wheels.

Great thread.

After 4 years of kicking around the idea of painting my stock rims (which I use in the spring and fall) I've decided to bite the bullet and just do it.

I started last night and I got the first rim done with about 4 hours worth of work. I started the second one tonight and cut my time down to about 3 hours a wheel now.

The wheels are being painted gloss black.

Here's the before, and hopefully within a few days I will have the after.

Okay, here's the after shot. The car has been in storage since August so it just needs a good wash and wax. Overall I'm very happy with how they turned out, although it was muchmore work than I wnated to do and taping the tires off was a pain in the ass.

Oh, and before anyone about the rear drum being painted I just want to say the reasoning behind that is because I figured the red paint looked better than the way it was which was flakey rust.

Very good write-up

I plan on doing this in a few weeks, I have a set of the 17" Saleen Focus Wheels that are kinda ruff paint-wise so they'll be getting a custom HOK mixture when I shoot them.
