sure OK.

When its ready to be driven, just take it in (don't forget proper drive it like you would break in procedure) to your nearest emissions station. don't care if the car fails as it will anyway. they wll give you 15 days to retest it without having to pay again.

take your registration and safety/IM papers to the DMV. go early too of course. when you talk to the person, be nice but tell them that you haven't driven the car for two or three years because you were slowly putting a new engine in it.

they should waive your fees for the two years, ask for your current inspection papers and give you a temp registration you will tape in the window until you get your new stickers. this is where you break the engine in and drive it until its emission status is ready. any parts place can scan this and tell you if it is ready. then go have it retested.

I've never been pulled over in an expired vehicle and I drive many of them. if you do, just tell them you're on your way to have it inspected.

I've been pulled over twice 'on my way' to registration. But the worst I got was a 'fix it' ticket.

Proved I registered it, and the ticket was waived. 'They' say the proper procedure is to go the DMV and get a 'temp' registration to use before you even get it inspected...but I've never done it.

I live right next to the DMV so I could walk there in 15 min... so you can get a temp registration without inspection? There is a inspection place/shop that I go to that's, let's say understanding... but is a few miles away.

I have an Xcal 2 and will be getting a tune from Tom so my guess is that I should also be able to check when it will be ready. Just need to make sure there are no codes and the systems are ready (allowed 1 system not ready in the emissions test right?). Do code readers show status if systems?

correct and most all basic code readers will at least show the "O2 status" or however they care to call it. Emissions status etc.

either one is up to you. You can get a temporary tag if you're moving the car out of state so they say but I've used one before as well.

ive never had a problem getting a temp tag, you just go pay the taxes and they give it to you. The only crappy thing is that they make you come back with the inspection paperwork to get the stickers
