I have a 2009 Focus SE that I believe is the same as the 2008 version. Could you post or scan the "Special Service Message" for the group. I mentioned it to my dealer and they didn't know what i was talking about. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

If the audio unit in the 2008 focus is programable like the ones in the mustang (and many other models)it should be possible to get the steering wheel controls to work. I will need to get a vin of a 2008 that came with the controls then check on the ford site to see if there is "as-built" data listed for the aduio unit. If it is there you should be able to have the dealer reprogram the audio unit to make it work. You could pm me your vin but be aware the ford site is sometimes down over the weekend as it is now for vin specific info.

I approached my dealer about doing this and they claimed there was no fix for getting cruise control for 2008/2009 vehicles. I produced the special service message and they are looking into it. I got the impression that they would rather sell the "drivers package" with aluminum wheels, fog lights, etc and cruise control than have customers pass and afterwards buy the steering wheel and the reflash ECM. The are in the business of upselling the other stuff.

At any rate they will be getting back to me tomorrow to confirm that they can do this.

Is there any other way to reflash the ECM? Buying the steering wheel is the simple part.

I can verify that swapping the steering wheel for one with buttons, plus enabling the feature in the ECM does in fact give you fully functional cruise control. However, it is still the dealer's perogative to agree to install it rather than try to sell you a more expensive model. (If you are in Southern California, try Chris Johnson in the service department at Fritts Ford in Riverside. He was very pleasant to work with.) If you do not already have the steering wheel radio buttons, make sure your replacement just has the cruise control buttons. From what I was told, there is no way to enable them in the radio but instead would have to swap out the whole radio assembly.

BTW, the total for parts, labor, and tax was $371.82.

I had my dealer install the new steering wheel and reprogram the computer and the cruise now works great on my 2009 SE. I got the steering wheel without the radio buttons. Well worth doing!

so you can get a steering wheel with JUST cruise buttons and not audio buttons? If so, that's the one I'd get

Yes, you can get a steering wheel with just the cruise control buttons. Unfortunately, from what I am told, the radio buttons tie directly into the radio assembly and it is not possible to get them working with a radio that did not have them originally installed. I suppose I could swap it out, but since the right side of the steering wheel is about a foot away from the actual radio, I didn't think it was a big deal. :-)

Anyone have a PN for this steering wheel?
