New project

In the next few months, I'll be doing paint and body work on a R34 kit. It's a full fiberglass kit for my ZX3. I can paint, but I need a lil help on what I would need to get as far as supplies go. Like, what would be the best products out there as far as a spray gun and compressor, but reasonable on price? What is the most important parts of the whole job to be done that I SHOULD NOT skip? Is there a special paint for fiberglass that I need to get so it would adhere better? Things of that nature.

The whole reason behind this is that I want to make the effort and get this done by me and friends. Not a shop. You get it done by a shop then you don't learn anything, you don't get the awesome feeling of accomplishment, you don't feel like it's your work that got done to your car, etc.

Any and all help would be great! I know with the help from my FF family, this will get done and get done right .

I'm going to keep this thread as an upto date calendar on what I have done so far and cash spending with pics. First, pics of the kit and my car:

never painted body kits before, but i have painted a little bit with an air brush. Make sure to just go slow and do a through job. Clear coat is MONDO importante to protect the paint and make it shine. You will also have to buff it once you get it painted, and make sure to take time with that. Best of luck!

Oh yes! Time is not a factor to me. If this takes 2 weeks or 2 years, I'm fine, but as long as it goes right .

I was looking a lil closer at the kit the other night and found a couple of stress cracks. So it looks like I'll be doing a lil body fillin too! FUN! While I'm at it, maybe I'll fill in the licence plate indent. Any tips fellas???

Sweet Billy, thanks! I'll be getting that then. Out of anyone on here on fiberglassing I trust you the most. I may need a hand with a few things and could use your uber knowledge if you're down one day ?

Did a small test fit with the sideskirts today. I didn't actually drill them in place, but just sort of let them "stick" on. Fitment is pretty good, not the greatest. So that means I'll have to do more work. Here's a couple pics (the car is FILTHY!) :

LMK what you guys think, I mean come on. I would like to know I'm being supported in all this...lol

That'll prolly be this weekend. I'm going to grab my tools from my buddy and do it all in my complex parking lot...lol I can't wait long enough to do it in my new house!

The front bumper will go on Friday and I should have the rear drilled and on Saturday. Only problem I can see is that temp. has been around 100-110 out here in the Valley of the Sun . From there, I'll leave them on for a week or 2 so I can see what clearance issues I'll have.

Total cash spent to date:

$0

Well, technically over $400, but I got my use out of the tools I traded for the kit .

Looks like a nice project. Too bad I don't know how to paint, otherwise I'd leave some tips.

all i got to say is make sure that u always keep the peices getting painted clean because the slightest touch with a finger tip will make the paint bubble
