Alternator Question?

My dad keeps telling me the alternator is going because he can hear it when i start the car. How can you tell if it's going, and if it is should i buy the OEM one or go with this one http://focus.c-f-m.com/index.asp?Pag...&strVarSel=175 ?

Take the belt off, and spin the alternator by hand. If it makes a "wuurrrr" sound, the bearings are on the way out. if it spins smooth and quite, then it's somthing else making the noise. Could also be timing belt idler pully or water pump.

go get it checked out by your local autozone, advanced auto ect... they can hook it up and tell you what amps it's putting out. also you can do what jeffescortlx said^^
and go by feel more then anything. see if you hear/feel grinding. but really the only way you'll know if it's going out is you need to see what it's putting out.

Other then that it could be just an alt that makes a funny noise lol or something else for that matter.

Is the battery light on? When my alternator was dying, the battery light came on.
