A/C Problems
Hello all.
I have a 2001 SE with 90k. I bought it last November, and the A/C has not worked since then. The light on the dashboard switch comes on, but I can't feel/hear the compressor engage. There's a plug with two wires on the compressor, one ground wire and a (if I remember right) green/yellow wire. I tested these with a multimeter and the ground seems good, but the green/yellow wire doesn't show any voltage with the ignition on, engine running, and A/C switch on. Any ideas where I go from here as far as troubleshooting? I didn't check the switch for continuity yet, I'll do that next. There's an A/C relay under the hood, but I'm not sure how to test it. Thanks Andy |

There are many conditions that will stop power from reaching the compressor clutch. The most common is a loss of A/C refrigerant, causing the pressure to be so low that the low-pressure cutoff switch blocks power to the compressor clutch. On a vehicle that age, the most likely problem is that the A/C system has a leak and has lost pressure. |

> Ahh... I didn't realize there was a low pressure cutoff.
Yes, virtually all auto A/C systems have it so that the compressor doesn't destroy itself if the refrigerant is gone. |

> It could also just be a bad A/C relay
Correct. I myself would use a multimeter and a wiring diagram to trace back from the compressor and see where the power is being stopped. |

I swapped the low beam and A/C relay, and the relay is good. I don't have a wiring diagram - any suggestions for sources besides buying a chiltons or haynes manual?
