Painting over the chrome on the 08.

So, my first new car is arriving at the dealer on Wednesday. Originally hoping for a black exterior, but the only one the salesman could find had a few extra options that I didn't want and definitely didn't want to pay for. So, I settled with a Vermillion Red SES.

Now, I'm in the same boat as a lot of people who think the chrome looks kinda of out of place, specifically on the side vents, and to a lesser extent on the front grill.

I know there was a thread a few pages back where someone painted the chrome on the side vents, he also had the red and the color matched decently well. So my questions are this:

1. Painting doesn't void any warranties, does it?

2. Think black would look pretty decent instead of trying to find a red to match the rest of the car?

3. As far as painting over chrome, the basic deal is sand paper off the chrome, etching primer, sand the primer, paint, then clearcoat?

Any other ideas/suggestions/comments would be appreciated. Probably don't plan on doing this right away, but they're future plans.

2. Black would look good , as long as you where going to put on some black rims and tint the windows/tails. Just my opinion.

Thanks, and yeah, I was thinking that if the chrome goes black the rims would have to as well or else it would look kind of goofy.

But like I said, these are just future plans, so I'm going to leave my options open.

I second that. Black would make for a nice contrast. Go somthing along the lines of this:

Yeah, that's pretty nice. I also just realized that as an Northern Illinois University student/graduate, I can get special NIU plates (red and black are NIU's colors) instead of the normal blue/white Illinois plates, so I can even get that to fit.

The chrome gone makes the 08 look pretty good, heh, might even grow on me!
Black would look sweet, and if you could get the headlights black to match, that would be better!

i'm thinking about stripping the chrome, cutting out the ford logo mounting area , and using FG to make it either two straight bars, or to bars with a small flat midsection to make the holes just two rectangular 'vents'...

i'll let you know how it goes... its pretty dang hot outside.. too hot to smell FG
