Did I blow a good deal????

I think this may be my first post as I generally search for all my answers. Here is my dilemma. I was at the dealership last night trying to work a deal on a 2004 svt with 64000 miles on it. I was going to trade in my bare bones 2000 zx3 with 90000 miles on it. Here are the specifics of the deal. They were willing to go to $9500 for their svt and I wanted $3000 for mine. They only want to offer $2500. The svt appears to be in ok condition but, the sunroof may not be working correctly and it's got some cosmetic flaws. I say ok because I take very good care of my vehicles and this one would need some tlc imo. Nothing I can't live with but, they are things to consider. My zx3, appearance wise, is tip top for an 8 year old car but, it does have a blemish or two but, it is going to need some mechanical work like brakes, alternator, and some other little things here in the near future.

So my question is, based on the info I have provided, is it a good deal or should i stand my ground on what i want for my focus?

That's a great deal. While your 2000 may be in great shape, the books say 2000 isn't worth squat (many recalls/problem areas for that year model), so you can't blame the dealer for not wanting to pay a lot when they can't turn around and sell it for much.

My advice, if your car is as good as you say it is, maybe try Craigslist and put lots of good pictures of how good your car looks. Also emphasize the low miles. Get your $3k and then go back to the dealer (if they still have it).

Hmm.. Yeah.. 2004 SVT for $9,500 is not that bad. better than 2003 civic for $9,000. lol

Anw, ur 2000 should be around $3,000. So, I would say, stick with it, esp it has quite a low mileage (90k for 8 years car??)

I am thinking about calling them back and seeing if they would give me $2800 for my zx3 but, i don't think I am willing to go any lower than that. I guess if the svt were in mint condition, which it is not, I would have less hesitation in pulling the trigger. At 64000 miles, i think some maintenance issues are going to arise. Am I wrong in this thinking on a 2004 model?

Well the SVT is of course a Zetec, so it's not too far from needing a Timing Belt. Lots of other little misc. things too, other belts, hoses, lubricants, etc.

If you're not happy with that SVT deal, then shop around for something that you'll be happy with. Buying a car is a big deal, you shouldn't settle for something you're not totally thrilled with. You may end up having to drive a little bit out of the way, but it's worth waiting for the right deal to come along.

yea you may have to replace brake pads or somthing... but check out the car thoroughly and you should be fine. You are getting a much better car.... i think if the difference is going to be 2-300 bucks, its not worth squabbiling over, especially since that is the youngest year svt you are gunna find.... not all that common

If you're only $500 apart, you should be able to make a deal.
See if they will come DOWN $250.00 on the price of the SVT (to save you some tax) and meet you halfway on the trade-in ($2,750). (This is a flim-flam, BTW - you still get your original deal with this.)
-- If they're only willing to budge $250 - take it anyway.

Thank you all for the input and advice. I think I will give them a call and see if we can't work something out. I really only want a newer car to replace my aging focus and if I am going to replace it, I may as well replace it with an svt.

Would it be worth it to purchase some sort of extended warranty for this car? I am not really familiar with the reliability of the svt.
