The filter is supposed to last a long time. I think it's supposed to be 100,000 miles before you are supposed to have it replaced.

You can't clean it yourself because it's in a sealed box.

o you think it would be worth my time to change it to a cai or sri and would that void the warranty?

I made the stealth intake for about 26 bucks, and I think it was worth it. You can always return the intake to stock if you have to take it in, however it's not supposed to matter unless the intake was the cause of the problem. They could say that it was the cause of the problem just to get out of doing the work though.

You might want to read this before you decide to get rid of the "lifetime" filter:

The principle and benefits of the Visteon intake (I have one in my '05) as brought up (admittedly by the Visteon engineers) in their SAE whitepaper, and all the OEM stock intakes for that matter, unfortunately will be totally lost on most people on this website who totally buy into the Mickey Mouse aftermarket "companies" marketing and sales pitches, peer pressure, and of course.......the "cool factor". They see some so called gain in HP on some "dyno run", failing to realize other factors other than the intake may have accounted for the HP gain. Having said that, Ford has dumped the Visteon intake on the '08 Focus for the conventional panel filter housed in the standard airbox with the air intake where it should be.......in the grill area. I would have preferred the '08 style intake on my '05. My guess is that the cost of the Visteon system was the factor there. There was at least one person on this forum that had recently obtained an '08 intake and was going to install it in an earlier year Duratec. What happened with that?

Yes, the system undoubtedly cost much more than the standard system and, as seen on this forum, the benefits from the additional cost were not perceived by the customer, e.g., most buyers had no idea it was different, and many of those who did somehow thought it was a negative, rather than a positive.

They were smart to take it off the Focus and should probably consider it as more appropriate for Lincoln products.

What happed is that the diameter of the 08 intake where the MAF sensor sits is larger than on 05. Thus car has to be tuned to have propper Air/Fuel ratio. Also battery box, the buttom part(metal) has to trimmed, specifically the part where baterry bolts down needs to be cut like 3" for the airbox to fit. In addition the metal plate that goes to the right fender from the battery box has to be cut down like 3-5". Also some cutting of 08 airbox possibly needed.
Result=Not worth doing, because possible gain is like 5hp + there is no aftermarket filter that flows better than stock yet. Cost is ~$300+ for the tune +intake $200+ work to make it fit=not worth doing.
People save time and money and get real CAI or SRI or Stealth CAI.
