Reprogramming instrument cluster

My focus doesn't have the tach and I'm wondering if I found one at a junkyard if the dealer could reprogram the mileage so that it matches mine. Also, I have a 2004 Wagon with the SPI, would the cluster for any year work?

Not sure if any SPI's came with tachs, so Idk if the ecu will support it. I think the dealer would be able to do it, it'll cost you though.

I doubt the dealer can reprogram one.

Last time I talked to a dealer about a cluster swap they told me they I would have to come in to have my mileage checked and they would do the swap in order to ensure no odometer fraud. It sounded like they had to have the cluster programmed and shipped, but I'm not positive.

The total they quoted me was $340 ish, but that included the cluster.

All you can do is call and ask. Worst thing they can say is that they can't do it.

The odometers in our cars are completely tamper-proof. They're set at zero at the factory and don't change from there. Not even Ford can do it. However, the dumb @#$%s had the foresight to put the odometer in the INSTRUMENT CLUSTER, something that could easily break and need a donor... >.<

The price they quoted you included a new cluster ('cause they'd have to start with a new one) and the dealer programming the build type (atx, mtx, antilock or not, tc or not) for your car.

One option is to search until you find a used one close to your mileage. + or - 10% is not considered enough of a discrepancy to deign a mileage jump or drop as "fraud" in most states. Also, if you can't do that, get a notary to make an odometer statement for you that states the mileage of both units at the install, and the correct mileage of the car. This should, if drawn up legally and signed by a notary, hold up in court.

I am doing a test. The milage is stored on the processor chip of the cluster. 1 do what Roland suggested. or two get a new one or low milage one so you know it is good. Then generate a pulse into it with power on to rack up the milage until it matches. like I said, I am going to test both. I figure the processor will be a pain to swap, but I dont want a new cluster with 90K on it so I have one with 30k to feed pulses into.

ok so that kills the idea of them jsut turning on the little shift light in the one i swapped in. since ford would take the old one and thusly steal my pimp as hell cougar needles.

Just go after market with a tach driver or turn on the "test tach" that you already have, big PITA though.

actually tha aftermarket tach is probably a better idea since you can get them with shift lights, and its easy to install.if you follow the directions. jsut dont mount it in the windsheild. find a better dopt. (like maybe where the dopey coin tray by the cluster is?)
