I have a 2002 Focus SE Wagon with 193,000 miles. It's an automatic with armstrong windows. I just put in the third split port engine. Which won't start yet, something to do with the starter wiring. Great car when it runs. Probably should have scrapped it, but the body is solid and I had the time to do the engine swap myself. Don't recommend doing an engine swap, for this car. I've never seen anything so complicated and jammed into such a small space before. The worst part is the steel bolts into aluminum. The two metals react to form a white powder which basically means snapping off bolt heads or worse, cracking the aluminum the bolts go into.
The worst thing to have to replace would be the starter motor. In a word: nightmare.
Good thing about wiring on this car is all the connectors are different and you can't mix them up when putting back together. The newest design features for me were the snap together connections for the fuel lines. I tried to twist them off and they won't come off that way. A donut tool is required to jam into the connection to make them release. Then they pull off easy and go back together easy.
I was just out in the garage trying to figure out why I've got no power to the starter motor and a battery light on, on the dash. Tried to jump start it with another battery, still didn't work. Tomorrow's another day . . . yawn.
Takes more than talk to get things done.
I'm an amateur back-yard-mechanic (BYM) who has removed two Split Port engines and transmissions from two Focuss cars. 2001/2002 and made one used parts combination to put back in the 2002.

2003 2.0 spi worst car ive ever had.

At a little under 150,000 miles the engine blew due to cracked head, i have heard this 2.0 spi engines are widely known for that. Due to finances I was not able to go out and finance a new car, so had to get the engine rebuilt for $1500.00. After 9 months of the rebuild I have ticking in the engine already. Have had to replace struts, shocks, many and many wheel bearings, cannot adjust the toe alignment on real wheel. Just really dissappointed in this car for only being 10 years old and also how Ford motor company has known about certain issues with this car and has shyed away from correcting them once someone purchases 1.

My son just bought a 2013 ST, even more fun!

Thats great. Not too many 2.3 liters with high mileage. Which motor oil and viscosity are you using - Motorcraft 5W20, Mobil 1 5W20 or something else? Also, what oil change intervals?
