2003 SE Wagon Zetec. New to me at 148,100. Hopefully will have life left in her. I've taken a few cars past the 200k mark and one to 350k.

I have looked and can't seem to find any post that would summarize lessons learned and issues to be aware of and things to do for the various flavors - ie. Gen 1 Zetec, etc. - for those who are new to foci and are wanting to make sure they can bring their ride up to the best mechanical condition possible for reliability. Things like best oil to use, best tranny servicing (if any), fuel filter, etc. Essentially a "Checklist for New Foci Owners" to get a headstart on the maintenance game.

Can anyone point me in the correct direction? I have tried searching, but I can't find any one post that summarizes everything and points out the pitfalls that a new Focus owner should be aware of.

Thank you much in advance!

Mileage issue? Maybe?

Hi all.
4 Weeks ago I totalled my 2000 Zetec w/ 336k on it.
It was a 4 door sedan 5 spd manual
2 weeks ago I got a 2000 Zetec wagon w/ 164k.
Automatic trans.

My issue is this. And this may be super silly as a question. However into the abyss I go.
On the sedan I was normally getting anywhere from 600 kms to 650 kms per tank highway.
On the wagon I am only getting approx 450 kms to 500 kms per tank highway.

Is this normal? Any suggestions for increasing those numbers?
I have changed air filter, tire pressure is good, changed fuel filter, ran a tank of lucas injector cleaner and I drive like an 80yo in a windstorm.

One other thing.... in the sedan my temp guage needle stood straight up like a soldier at opperating temp. In the wagon it sits about 3/4 up. Again, is this normal?

Thanks for any help

25mpg is about average for the Wagon so your numbers aren't off too bad. There's a bit more weight with the Wagon. Temperature needle doesn't seem right. Mine sits right in the middle all the time and never moves.

Thank you for your reply.
Re; Mileage, ya I was afraid of that. It has gotten marginally better since doing some mainenance on it. I think it sat for quite a while before I got in it.

Re; Temp.... ya I was afraid of that also. I bought a new thermostat, I'll change that out and see if it makes a difference.

Again, thank you

No problem. I will say that on the highway I can get insane mpg on my Wagon if I drive it correctly but city is where it sucks gas. I get about lows 20's in the city and I've gotten in the mid 30's on the highway (38 is the highest I've ever recorded).

Yes, I'm noticing that. Seems sometimes I can almost see the needle moving when in the city. Need to figure out this one's quirks. I had the last one 7 years, I knew every creak and moan in that car. Knew every little quirk it had, right down to knowing if she was going to behave when it was humid or not (She hated the rain).

A little more time I guess .
