... seriously though, terrorism? There's not really that many people out there for this event. What, are they going to car bomb villiagers in the bush? Kidnapping might be a bigger threat.

"Fears of Terrorism" is only one aspect of the cancellation.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't happy about it either.

Every year the rally gets threats and they press on without worry.

However, this year, a family of 4 was killed in Mauritania. Al Queda claimed responsibility for the attacks and claimed that there would be more if the rally was allowed to continue.

The organizers decided that bystanders being put at risk by terrorism was enough to cancel the event.

With respect to the risk of the race itself...

On average, one person per year is killed in the race. Usually a bystander. Since much of the race is run through the African bush, the roads are not cordoned off. As a result, wildlife, cattle and even the local populace will wander into the road or step in front of a vehicle.

There have been many calls to cancel the race for this reason.

finding a land mine on a quad would suck so bad. but its a shame, i really wanted to go to one (or even race in one, if that was ever a possibility)
