Front axle \ cv joint replacement

I need to replace my cv joints on my 2002 SVT. I have seen on some threads to just buy the new axle assembly. How difficult is it to do it yourself? If so any how to articles out there on how to do it. Also anyone have a delaer do it and how expensive was it?

The shafts are easy to get out. A slide hammer with a claw foot makes the lh side easier. You'll have a hard time getting parts for the axles to rebuild because of the getrag transmission. I found a company out east that was able to rebuild mine. From the dealer they're like $400 a side.

yes your better off just buying axles,,primarily because you have an innerside and outerside to cvc joints,and no point replacing just the one.and its an easier process as an axle,,its gonna be a chore regardless..

I need to do mine as well on my '02 ZX3. Any idea what these axles may cost? Only a dealer part?

Pretty sure SVT axles are not same as regular Focus.

Yes, the SVT axles are different and not interchangable with stock Focus, ATX or MTX. I don't think you'll find the right ones for a svt from the aftermarket stores. Std Focus yes, SVT no. The inner splines that go into the trans is the difference. I priced a RH side from the dealer at about $400.

Looked at the rockauto website. The motorcraft half shafts for the 285 transmission could be the correct ones. The Getrag trans code is 285 in the Ford manual.
