Angry SVT backfired through the intake manifold!

So i was having problems last night with my car starting now today i replace the fuel filter, replaced the plugs and check all the obvious problems that would cause it. Try starting it again it cranks over 2-3 times and BOOM backfired through the intake manifold. Yeah blew the manifold apart fuel was all over it took the plugs back out they are fouled and the top of the pistonw were wet! WTF . Best case scenario is it just jumped time or something and just messed up some valves. I dunno prob take the head off tomorrow and see whats up. Any help would be appreciated or helpful info. or any info on where to get an head possible complete engine assembly.

Well the only thing that would cause a backfire through an intake manifold would be the timing... thats what i thought....

If it just jumped a few teeth on the belt it shouldnt have ruined any valves.

Sounds like you cranked over the motor too much and forgot the fact that the injectors spit fuel regardless. So you flooded the engine, soaked the plugs and fumes collected in the manifold. Finally a spark ignited the fuel laden air, blowing up the manifold, one of the valves must have been just perfectly open to allow the ignition to travel back up into the manifold.

I feel bad it happened man but I must say you should have known not to do that!!!

....these cars will do this especially when cold. Sometimes they will not start properly and load up with fuel. Then when started, will backfire through the intake and blow it apart. They also have been known to do this in other cases, but in this case, i would bet thats what happened. I have also found that they do it worse with a tune. One thing to remember, when you try to start one, if it acts kind of funny as if it want to stutter, stall, etc, dont try to hold the pedal down or pump it. This can make it happen. Just slightly open the throttle and start it and hold the throttle just barely open till it clears up. You need to remember that the svt has some very big cams and overlap. This compounds the feedback effect.

I had this happen when I dumped too much SeaFoam into my intake. I don't think you necessarily destroyed the DSIM as much as you just removed it from the head. I would pull all the plugs to let the fuel evaporate, reinstall the DSIM and any vac lines that might've come off, pull the fuel pump fuse and run a compression check. If that looks good, test that the DSIM rotates freely, put in new plugs and the fuse, and try starting it up.

Maybe thats why Ford put the IM on couplers. When it goes bang it should just separate at the rubber...."should".

I have a set of CFM silicone couplers still sitting in a box cause I don't want to risk the manifold actually exploding rather than just popping off.

I have them on my manifold. Unless you are boosting they are not at all necessary.

Id say for safety sakes, if EVER your SVTF doesn't start after even 5 seconds of cranking - something is wrong. Pull the plugs and let the cylinders air out a bit. Its not worth popping that manifold.

The whole mess is crazy i thought i just popped the back half of the DSIM off but its def broken there was a piece under my car from it. The top half is cracked on the back side of the DSIM. I pulled the plugs and 3 of 4 pistons were wet on top. I dunno but i just think there is more to what happened than just a backfire. Before it started my dome light went nuts flashing on and off when there was no key in the car and i tried turning it off nothing stopped it, and this morning i go out and the radio is lit with these crazy things that do not make sense? Maybe i can post some pics but it looks like chinese on my radio.

Jesus Christ. LOL... You had electrical problems before trying to start the car?

Did you install a headunit yourself before this all happened, perchance?
