Rear brake drum replaced today

Wow, I'm lucky....

For the last two or three weeks maybe, I heard squeaking noises coming from the brakes when I stop. Yesterday, when I was leaving the hospital with my father, he heard it... Today, I worked in detail shop, my dad works inside Ford building, and he told me to take it in to have it checked.

I don't know full detail, but the mechanic found the drum cracked. This is the most common Ford problem?

I just have to say I'm VERY lucky to have it replaced same day because mechanic had to order it. Luckily, one customer had to have his rear brakes replaced, but they never showed up, and we took that replacement.

It cost $350. But I'm very lucky to pay nothing. Warranty FTW!

Did anyone have had this problem before? If not, and is hearing squeaking noises, have it checked!!!

Just thought I'd share....

well replacing rear drums is very simple, i wouldnt recommand u takin it to ford to get it fix for that ugly number 350 dollars. The drums on the focus do suck tho and squeak alot. Next time id recommand doing it yourself, its always good to know. Brakes are very easy to work with

Dude.

My father worked at Ford, and he's like a God around there... I can get away with it without having to pay so much, but not always...

It was a full brake job for both rear brakes.

Oh, did I mention I was gonna leave for Virginia, 6 hours drive, this Wednesday? Real good thing I got it replaced today instead of actually waiting and mess up the plan.

You don't hear about car drums cracking very often. Trucks do it all the time though. They more or less explode.

truck drums have to endure much more stress and more load than the ones on a focus.

I second what Blurv said- I call that a freak problem.

Most of the drum brake squeal that FF's hear is due to a lack of grease on the shoes at the contact points. It's really just an annoyance. There's a way to tell if the squeal is related to a brake failure or just a lack of lube- but I'm not positive what to listen for. I'd say that hearing some squeal while the brakes are applied is normal for a lack of grease- I experienced that. Squealing that lingers after the brakes are released could be a sign of some damage. Squealing that quiets when the brakes are applied is the squealer telling you it's time to replace the shoes.
