Engine going bad?

I been having quite a bit of problems with my car lately. My brakes are still bad but can't take it to the shop till this weekend and now my check engine light came on. My car, at any gear and always around 2 or 3 rpm seems to shake, not much of a shake but seems to lose hp and also seems to choke on gas. My car is a 2000 focus zts. It's a great car that has been good to me... it's a manual. Can anyone give me some help on this... one of my friends said it needed transmission oil but i cannot find the how-to for this. I think i might take it to autozone tomorrow see if they can check what is wrong with my engine since I been reading that their engine code reading is free.

Shake can come from a few different places, I would first ask have you changed your engine mounts, that's a good place to start, the lower dogbone one causes some shake. Secondly I would say clean your MAF, I cleaned mine and it smoothed out my engine real quick. Third change your fuel filter that could cause it to miss a bit and cause it to spit and sputter. I don't think you need to mess with the tranny until you at the least check these things, but like more people will probably ring in with, spark plugs, wires, general maintenance stuff should be checked too.

^^ as said above, check all of the general maintance stuff.

I would say it sounds like a fuel system issue, check the fuel filter and clean the MAF.

Engine shaking and shuddering at a given RPM doesn't sound like a symptom of transmission fluid being no-good, so I would put that at the bottom of the list.

Just came back from Washington ( I live in Nebraska) about a month ago so I just changed the oil, spark plugs, oil and air filter about a month ago. Oh the check engine light is on and it blinks at speeds about 50 miles plus. I bought the fuel filter and will also change the spark plug wires. Thanx for the help. Keep the ideas rolling please.
