What I Drive: 2012 Focus SE Hatch Tuxedo Black

We got our '12 Focus last weekend! It's an SE hatch in Tuxedo Black with auto. trans., moonroof, sport package, "Rapid Spec 203 A" package with Sirius and 1 or 2 other options. One test drive and my wife, in particular, was sold. I know I'll like it a lot, too.

The powershift auto. trans. is good. Shifts are quick but not too firm. I actually prefer a manual trans. but I have one in my other car (VW GTI) so the auto. is fun and convenient. I like +/- button on the stick. I don't think paddle shifters are a necessity.

We'll take our first little road trip tomorrow. It should be fun. I'll have to remember to vary my speed/rpm on the freeway because of the break-in period.

One think I found kind of odd: there's no cover on the engine. Apparently, only the higher priced models get one. It's no big deal but it seems to me like a silly thing to omit from the SE. I'll check with the dealer to see if I can buy one.

We pick up our 2012 SE auto sedan tomorrow morning. The interior of the Civic turned my wife off - we never even bothered to drive it - but my wife and daughter said the Focus was just so easy to drive, seats four at least, with great visibility and a useable trunk, and good on gas.

The Sport Pkg was a must, though; I won't buy another car with drum brakes, especially in a stability-controlled world. Discs are self-adjusting, and I've spent enough time messing around with rusting "non"-adjusting mechanisms on Honda rear drums.

I have great hopes for the torque-vectoring traction control in snow, and pulling-into-traffic-from-a-side-street-in-the-rain: I was impressed enough with the car's suspension.
