Was that our exit?!?

Atco Raceway and Broken Axles
Ok, so a ton of Cobalt SS/SCs, RSX Types S, SRT-4s, and many other have had their axles snap.
How much larger and stronger are our axles and drivetrain components? I want to run slicks to get into the 13s, but dont want to hurt the old drivetrain.

Busted axles are going to happen on your car, it happens. I wouldn't say ours are any stronger or weaker than those you mentioned.

If I recall correctly, Tom has put over 500+ WHP down on stock axles and nobody really makes an aftermarket axle for the Focus. I think its safe to say that the Focus axles are pretty damn strong.

the problem with the SS/SCs and probably the SRT4 as well is the driver on the cobalt forums they says the main reason there axles are breaking is wheel hop.

I had the same question and briefly entertained installing stronger axles.
I run Hoosier Cup tires and the track and (when they are fresh), the earth moves when I hook up. I was advised by Tom, and many others, that the drive axles on the SVT were one of the few parts overengineered on the car. While possible, the occurence is remote, unless you are drag racing the car. As an FYI, the axles that I found while researching were $500 per side. Save your money.

for some odd reason, Fords "econobox" has extremely strong axles. The only reason I have replaced mine is becuase the cv boot ripped, and i replaced them with OEM ones.

The big thing is why would you want to beef up one of the cheapest, easiest parts of your drivetrain to replace? If you break an axle it takes 30 minutes and is fairly inexpensive rather than having them too strong and breaking something along the lines of trans itself.
