I don't believe they would cause your lid to pop open the way you're suggesting. I believe once the lid is all the way open is when you need the stronger shocks. At least for me. I don't like how it slams shut either.

My struts already showed up as well as my early Christmas present shift knob.
My wife let me put the shift knob on already, it's way nicer than the stock piece.

I just got my new struts today. It took maybe 5-10 minutes to install. They are much, much nicer than the worn out original struts. It is nice to have a hatch that actually opens itself after you lift it about half way. Two thumbs up.
