Have to, sadly, replace my RX-8...

This is very, very sad for me. I absolutely love my car. The look, the handling, the way it makes driving at any speed enjoyable. Sigh...

Anyway, due to past conflicts with my wife over my tire habit (new Azenis every summer, plus winter tires for each car) and the high cost of these same tires in the 245/18 size the RX-8 calls for I had to settle for high performance all-seasons for the whole year round. As anyone who as ever driven relatively wide all-seasons in bad winter weather knows, they should really be called "everything but ice and snow" tires. With the terrible snow ans ice storms here in the midwest this year, I have had several days when my car is genuinely scary to drive. In fact, 2 weeks ago I had a minor accident on I-80 and banged up my left-front fender. My wife, who is far less familiar with RWD and is currently pregnant, declared the current state of affairs too unsafe and that I need to find a safer year-round family car. Trust me, discussions of snow tires are simply not going to go anywhere.

So...

I need to find a new family car that, hopefully, will meet all my requirements and still be affordable. I have racked my brain and come up with very few real alternatives that are;

4-door
Trunk/hatch big enough to fit baby gear
FWD/AWD
Naturally Aspirated
FUN TO DRIVE
Won't be useless to autocross
less than $14K on the road either with current warranty and/or has a low aftermarket warranty cost ('04 SVT $1233,'02 Audi $4500 4yr 48K)

This leaves me with very few options thus far. As far as I can tell, this leaves me with, loosely;

ZX5 SVT
BMW 328Xi
Mazda 3s

There's also the possibility with going very cheap for a while (Mazda Protege 5's are around $6K-$7K), or getting a car that I wouldn't bother Autocrossing like a Legacy 2.5GT or Volvo V50 T5.

Anybody else have any bright ideas? I haven't been impressed with Subaru handling, modern Acura/Honda steering feel, Scion handling/feedback, Nissan handling/feedback. More than anything, it's that feeling of fun and agility that I am really looking for. Especially with Jr. in the car I am not going to be doing a lot of speeding or at the limit driving anywhere but the autocross course, so being able to enjoy the car at legal speeds and at less than threshold grip is the real lynchpin and honestly the real limiting factor here in my choices. I didn't really think about the 3 until I drove a base model one as a service loaner and had a blast. What else is out there that'd fit my guidelines that perhaps I haven't experienced?

Thanks!

sheesh talk about tire eating, Subies are the worst and to make matters even worse, if you blow one, or wear one or two out, you need to replace all 4.

ahem.. i have a ZX5 SVT '04 EAP heheh hmmmm.. I might sell..

Subes are also a nightmare to work on.

why not come back to the focus side, slap some snow tires on it and itll be good all year, and they arent balls expensive, and the snow tires will last longer then a year, prolly 2-3

haha i hope you're joking. if you can just pack up everything you own and sell your place while buying another and moving into the new place just like that you are freaking superman. if you're not, it's probably a really bad idea to try.
