Replacing only Thermostat

Hi all,

I did find this thread:

http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/s...ght=thermostat

but I wonder if the final outcome was successful or not.

My 2000 focus ZX3 is running somewhat cold, no CEL and so far mileage not affected too much yet either, but the engine takes too long to warm up and the cabin air is cooler than usual as well. But I want to get this fixed because I don't want a rich fuel mixture to kill my catalytic converter, those are even more expensive...

For now I just put two slices of cardboard in front of the radiator, and it did help, but I just need to replace the thermostat - the ford dealer here said it would be $174 with parts/ labor, I think that is a bit steep. Perhaps they think I meant the thermostat housing.

The housing has already been replaced, no leaks anymore :) The valve cover gasket had leaked oil down into the housing o-ring and made it leak when the car was cold. That problem is already taken care of, just need to put in a new thermostat on its own

I got the 2.0 Zetec, I did notice that it looks like I should have no problem getting to the 3 torx bolts holding the thermostat cover. They are on the front of the housing, and hey whaddaya know they aren't blocked but pipes or wires are anything, should be able to access them with a torx screwdriver. BUT I just wanted to check with the community to see if anyone else had done this before and if there were any issues they had in doing the thermostat only.

Thanks for reading.
