My HID retrofit (in progress)

I recently bought a pair of projectors off an Cadillac XLR from a member here, and I plan on retrofitting them into my Ebay projectors.

First off...Get into the headlights!
That of course means cooking them! Now my cousin and I are very impatient, so we just threw the second one in the microwave! Naw, J/K.

By UncleStupid86

After a bit of work with the sealant, we got the two halves apart, and here's what we have to work with now.

By UncleStupid86

By UncleStupid86

And here we run into our first problem! The two arrows point to the two things that are preventing the projector from sitting flush in the housing.

By UncleStupid86

Here are closeups of the two problem areas. That black bit is what moves the cutoff shield up when the high beam is activated. There is a little motor (shown in later pics) that moves a post up to push that black part up and that's what lifts the shield. The hi beam will not be used in my project because there's no room to mount the motor. No big deal..I'll just use the stock hi beam..I'll just have to rig it so the low beam stays on when the his are activated. Would have been neat to have a bi-xenon Focus, but oh well.

By UncleStupid86

As a result of those two tabs, the projector doesn't sit flush in the hole.

By UncleStupid86

So, what do we do? File that clip down of course! On the right is the filed down one, the left one has not been filed at all yet. We filed away just enough to fit it in right on this clip. We also removed the black plastic bit that moves the cutoff shield up when hi beam is activated. We also completely cut off another tab that was near the black plastic bit, but I don't have pictures of that.

By UncleStupid86

And, here's the HID bulb.

By UncleStupid86

And here's the motor (actuator) I mentioned. With it in place, there is no way the housing would close up correctly.

By UncleStupid86

We take working on cars VERY seriously!

By UncleStupid86

Maybe we can sell the lenses as a pair of stylish glasses!

Now, we'll need to make a bracket to hold the bulb in place on the back of the projector. I have no idea how it was done on the XLR, but there are two screw holes on the back of the projector, and it appears as though there must have been some system on the XLR that held the bulb in place.
We also need to drill a couple holes in the black plastic of the headlight to attach another bracket to hold the projector itself in place.

Yup, lots of work ahead, but I think it's worth it to have a unique Focus! Certainly not paying $700 for Machs. If this turns out well, I think I'd prefer these to the Machs because of the halos.

I'll keep this thread updated all the way through to completion! Thanks for bearing with me! Sorry I'm a bit long winded in my posts...I like details

Kudos for someone who's trying to do this right...while it may not be technically legal even if you mount them correctly so they won't be a hazard to others or yourself (as in, it wouldn't pass a vehicle inspection) this is leaps and bounds ahead of the typical retrofit where you just replace the bulb in whatever housing. Should be nearly the same as an OE HID housing when its all said and done...can't wait to see the finished product
