Anybody ever change struts & springs? Friend of mine just gave me a pair of struts with front springs - is there anything else I need? How hard of a job is it to do?

For reference, both of my front struts are shot, and the mechanic said I cracked the "housing" for the left strut...I'm guessing he means the strut tower brace. Would I need to buy anything else?

I ask because I was quoted $780 to do the job + new parts & alignment.

Not hard but I'd recommend professional spring compressor... dangerous without it. Job is involved but not hard. Remove wheels, unbolt struts, take out of the hub assembly. Take struts and springs to shop to put them on. Find a used strut brace from vendor or car- part.com

Ah, so a compressor is needed after all. Not sure I want to mess with that in my tiny driveway. Might be worth it to give all the parts to the mechanic and let him do the labor then...
