Dear Lord,
I have two wishes, the first being may you make people stop humping the titanium horse thinking its some miracle metal when its not that great, as well as the billet/machined horse as people just assume they are always stronger than a casting when its not true...

The second being, will you grant every human the thirst to seek out factful information, I saw someone scoff at the wealth of 100% factual information available on matweb.com about materials. Come to think of it, if you just grant this second wish the first one will pretty much take care of itself.

I honestly don't know why I read threads on FJ anymore.

Carbon fibre and titanium horse humpage here...BUT I do know they have limits and aren't always the best for an application...CAst IRON BRAKES FTW!!!...perfect example.

I agree they are fantastic, but they are NOT miracle materials, for its weight Titanium is amazing, but you HAVE to look at if the weight saved is really worth the weaker part. People just hump the horse and think its simply the best thing since sliced bread.

Its not so much the horse humping that bugs me more as the lack of research into the material. I was just told on FJ that I'll be thanking Titanium when I get a hip replacement... I looked it up and as it turns out its just used as a holding stick and its not even a preferred material for the actual ball and socket joint which is made from ceramic (the ball) and a cup made out of polyethylene. So I put that guy in his place. They use stainless steel, Cobalt Chromium, or Titanium for the joint holders not the actual ball and socket joint.... And I want to say I can remember hearing that there were some early problems with titanium joint replacements, I'm not sure if it was the joint or the whole assembly (holding stick included) I couldn't say I don't really care enough to try and dig up the article to figure out what material it was or what the problem was.
